help. i built a banjo out of a cigar box and a piece of wood. for the tuning pegs i put lock nuts into the back of the head and thumb bolts straight through so they go through the nuts and out the top. the problem is that this doesnt provide enough resistance and when i try to tighten the strings, the bolts won't stay in place. any idea for how i can make this work with only hardware store parts? (regular tuning pegs use gears so that the part you turn is on the side of the head and still causes rotation on the top, if this helps) thanks

Off the top of my head, drill a hole into the tuning screws/bolts/whatever, thread the string through it, then tighten them in the opposite direction that you screwed them in. That way the force will rotate the bolt in the most difficult direction for it to go.
