Now watching live with Donald Trump.
Hillary has a turn in a separate timeslot.

Impressions of Trump so far..

Every question seems to be "what specifically is your plan for xxxxx?"

Every answer seems to be a combination of non sequiturs, references to poll numbers, or just general high level (at best) musings on some things we wish could happen.

Admittedly biased, but this is painful and frustrating to watch. His answers just come off like he is completely in over his head.

Can't say I learned anything within the last 20 mins I've watched...

Well, Trump just confirmed that he thinks segregating the military by sex is a solution to sexual abuse in it, he would basically replace the entire top-level of the officer class, doesn't know that the military has a separate legal system, and quickly pointed out that Putin has a 82% approval rating in Russia so he'd happy to take his compliments. A banner day.

Keep us updated. I can't watch it unfortunately.

Lol. Unfortunately I missed 80% of it and came here and found no thread.

From the bits I saw of Trump, he said some pretty ill considered things.

One particular section was about "taking the oil in Iraq." I can't recall the actual question, as Trump wandered into this trying to weasel out of answering the original question.

Matt Lauer pressed him on "what does that mean? How do you just take Iraq's oil?"

Trump responded that "you just leave some people there and you know, take the oil. It used to be that to the victor goes the spoils, but we got nothing, so... Btw most people don't know, but Iraq has some of the largest reserves in the world... So we could just take a region and take that oil..."

Amazing.

He was"against" Iraq, but we should have compounded the bad decision to illegally invade their country based on lies in order to seize a portion of their country and steal their resources, and presumably keep a fighting force there to kill them when they try to take it back.

Wow. And he said this to a room of vets.

At least Putin could come up with protecting Russian speakers to justify invading Ukraine.

Hillary was up first before Trump. Basically, it went like this:

Hillary: Emails, context, nuance, hindsights, history, reality, eat your vegetables, make your bed.

Trump: Me, me, me, Bhengazi, tiny hand waving over details, the best words, me, me, me....with a topping of misogyny.

On several occasions, Trump has shown himself to be opposed to the basic ideals of Republicanism that this nation was founded upon and in favor of the kind of Imperialism that the founders fought against. But never mind.. let's all pay attention to those emails.

Just saw the part about taking the oil. Man that was painful to watch. Has no one yet told him pillaging the natural resources of a country you've invaded is a war crime?

This mans ignorance on foreign policy should be enough to scare anyone away from voting for him. And yet here we are.

Trump also seems opposed to the ideals of truthfulness and honesty.

He blatantly lies repeatedly about him opposing military actions in Iraq and Libya erstwhile using his amazing powers of hindsight as proof of his exceptional judgement and mastery of strategery.

*queue tape of Donald advocating invasion of Libya*

Anyone happen to know Adolf Hitler's approval ratings while fuhrer ?
Dictators and murderous thugs typically have very high approval ratings :D
All I know, I sure would not want to be the guy going door to door taking THAT poll.
Especially if I ever wanted to be seen again.... HeHe

So it was a draw. Nothing from either side.

By far the most irritating thing about Trump every question has me or I in it. He never says I'll work with or my cabinet. Even his recent I'll give the Generals 30 days to give me a plan to defeat ISIS.
Trump is an extreme top down leader which can be good because they tend to get stuff done but we've all seen top down managers get stuck over silly things too.

Sadly, Matt Lauer was awful and many of the questions from the audience were terrible.

The IAVA, which hosted the event, should have just asked their own questions.

Oh, and Trump was terrible.

What was the crowds reaction to most of his responses?

I watched some of the interviews from the vets who asked questions after the event and I don't recall a single positive comment.

Vague. Mushy. Didn't answer were common responses.

Lauer was terrible. How NBC picked the Today show host is beyond me.

Maybe they thought "hey, he really gave it to Lochte, so of course he can handle presidential candidates in a thoughtful Q&A on military matters."

I found it on YouTube.

I have yet to see trump actually articulate a solution to any issue that has been asked. For example when asked about what the US should do after defeating ISIS, he went off on a tangent and never even came close to answering the question.

When asked about rape in the military all he said was that he would set up a court system. Um... is there not already a court system in the military? Isn't that part of the issue? And he wants more of the same?

He's probably one of the few both Candidates agree on.

A top down leader can be good in business but put that in the federal government

A. POTUS - Hey Congress I want you to do this
B. Congress - Screw you separation of powers
C. Goto A

It was hard to watch. Not enough time for detailed answers. Matt just sucks as a moderator.

If anyone actually believes Trump about how the classified briefings went down, I've got the title to a bridge for you to buy.

all the reviews are panning Matt Lauer's skills, that he gave Trump softballs and never confronted him about a myriad of misleading answers. Meanwhile Hilary got the burn about her email scandal for 10+ minutes. Liberal media my ass.

My biggest annoyance with that too was it's barely related to the military topics, which was supposed to be the focus of the discussion.

Military aid to Ukraine?
Modernizing our nuclear weapon arsenal?
Sequestration?
North Korea?
Bases in Japan?
South China Sea?
North Africa?

The forum was too short to cover some important topics as it was, but Matt wasted a third of it on an enlightening discussion of email headers....

The media is like a dog who's seen a squirrel. Been standing at the door all day, it ran off ages ago, but if it gets a chance they will beeline right to the tree no matter what else is happening.
