A culture of entitlement!

Why do the Republicans hate America?

Before anyone says "an all volunteer military is better," this legislation is for national service, i.e. Peace Corp, Teach for America, military, etc. So people people can still volunteer for the military if they don't want to serve in something else.

You know it will have a clause that in times of war (see Iraq) that this "National Service" Bill will have some hidden BS that will allow corrupt neocon politicians to tear you away from your family and friends and life to fight one of the dumbest wars ever in Iraq

Has anyone here ever heard of the 13th Amendment?

The Constitution is just a piece of paper! And we don't live in some Libertarian utopia where you can mooch of the government and never pay the piper.

So your solution is to, quite literally, reintegrate general involuntary servitude into American culture?

Over my rotting corpse.

How are you defining Government? "By the People, For the People"?

Or maybe for the good of the country the Democrats will decide to have you toil away in some capacity they determine as valuable for the rest of your life. It is for the good of the people, so you should be content to help people without thinking of yourself.

I don't give a sh!t what side of the aisle you stand on while supporting this kind of crap, both are equally wrong.

Against.

I'd much prefer to use economic weapons against hostile regimes. In this case supporting development of alternative fuels (biodiesel, ethanol, methanol, nuclear produced bulk hydrogen, etc..) to undermine oil prices over the long term.

Iran is planning to use their Nukes as an offensive weapon?

Or as a deterrent?

Or?

Well at least you aren't one of those idiots who thinks we can keep invading countries without a draft.

Freedom is not free.

But becoming exactly what you claim to hate (in Conjur's case) is.

The Republicans should publicize this heavily next election cycle. We'll see how middle America likes the idea of "Democrats want to draft your sons/daughters to war!"

You are a "keyboard commando" for the opposite side. You risk nothing and stand for nothing better than those you oppose, just a different side of the same coin. Clearly the possibility of the draft/national service appeals you on a personal level out of some twisted sense of revenge directed against your ideological opponents.

Yeah - exactaly the type of target that the Republicans thrive on.

Charlie Rangel, a Veteran of the US Army with 4+ years of service during the Korean War.
Purple Heart, Bronze Star recipiant for his duty to his country.

Tell me about how much service to the nation the typical GOP yes-man has, you go girly-man.

I will not die for a false war created by politicians i didnt vote for that were brought to power by a completely broken election system.

If i take up arms, it wont be for the US military.

There's some famous quote about how a nation that becomes detached from its war and doesn't have to sacrifice to fight is on its way to self-destruction.

Americans are attached and affected personally by wars. The problem is the leadership of this country has become generally detached. The NeoCons Bush appointed and listened to are the most glaring example- civilian war mongers who have never put on a uniform.

Wow, you are way off the deep end of the Kool Aid pitcher.

You'll be glad to know PBS's Frontline will have a documentary this winter on Jonestown. You'll get to learn more about how you gave up your ability to think.

And the Democrats will continue their complete lack of any kind of "marketing" skill, and not capitalize on this, namely to say, "Republicans want to send troops into dubious wars based on false information, while ignoring the advice of experienced military generals."

Implementing the draft would introduce an element of randomness, which makes people wary.
"Oh, my kid didn't volunteer to enlist, so wars don't really affect me. I don't care what the government does then."

This changes when there is any chance that your kid can be ordered to serve in a war. Then you get lots more pissed off people, who are more willing to get out and vote, and do so for people who either aren't incompetent dimwits when it comes to organizing military action, or people who seek non-violent means to resolving conflicts.

None of this is new. Rangle has tried to introduce this legislation since the Iraq War began. Now that the Dems are in charge he can at least get it out of committee. I'm sure in his mind it's a backward slap at the Bush administration's handling of Iraq.

Nothing will come of it as no politician in his right mind would vote for it if there was a chance that it might actually pass.
