2.7 V6 engines mainly in sebrings, stratus, concords and intrepids

any body have problems with this engine, like oil burning/smoking, sludge, bad timing chains?

other engines:

There is a chart that shows the engines of most concern.

Chrysler 2.7 from 98 to 02 has 1,000,000 high risk engines.

Saab 2.0 and 2.3 from 98 to 03 has 135,000 high risk engines.

Toyota 2.2 and 3.0 from 1997 to 2002 has 3,300,000 high risk engines.

VW 1.8 from 97 to 04 has 426,000 high risk engines.

2.7 V6 timing chains

Those are some of the worst damned cars on the planet. A co-worker of mine just bought a 2003 Chrysler 300M (used) and he's had it in the shop already 4 or 5 times within a couple months. His latest problem is some kind of leak, whenever it rains the carpets are soaking wet and the car smells all moldy.

He's had brake problems, one which stranded him on the side of the road (rear brakes seized up). He's got a shudder in the drivetrain.

The car is a total hunk of crap.

So if you don't change the oil, the engine has a higher susceptibility towards sludge. Seems like a little preventative maintenance will go a long way.

That's exactly right. THe problem is that people run them to 5000 or 7000 miles (like the owner's manual says) and that is too long for the hot-running 2.7. If you change it at 3000 or less, you'll be fine.

I've got an 04 Sebring Sedan, with the aforementioned 2.4L 4 cyl. 150 hp / 150 torque, 20 city/28-31 highway mpg. Had it for a year, put 17k miles on it and no problems at all.

true changing oil often like every 3000 miles helps, but in these cars there still maybe a problem, exspensive high grade full true synthetic oil would help even more, as it can take more heat without breaking down

also people need to change there automatics transmission fliud every 30,000 miles too

Another problem is that hte waterpump can leak coolant into the oil. Bad design, IMO.

He probably has the 3.3/3.8 liter V6... if not, he has the 3.5. Both are good engines.

ok .. so what we're looking at here is a bunch of people who didn't change their oil regularly.

i don't care what the manual says, my oil gets changed at 3000 miles. i've never had a motor break down on me.

Regularity means very little. My Dad is on a strict 15,000 mile oil change interval. He's regular, but it's stupid. ;)

ok, 3,000 to 4,000 miles oil changes with regular oil, not full true synthetic oil

with full true synthetic oil you can go more miles before changing

the 2.4 is a great engine, very reliable. If you are gonna get one of these, it's best with the 4 banger.
