Chrysler said its name change does not affect its headquarters in Auburn Hills, Michigan, its management team or brands, including Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge.

Then who cares?

Won't the Fiat name give them another black eye? I've heard they've had some serious quality control issues...

What they really need to do is totally kill the Chrysler and Dodge brands and separate Jeep and RAM(trucks), (completely dropping the Dodge name) as their own subsidiaries. I'd almost rather own a Korean car than a Chrysler-made anything.

ram is already a separate brand.

what was wrong with american car makers: they had too many brands. what was fiat's solution? add 3 more!

that's always what the mothership says.

the a few years pass and the mothership wants cost savings, and to consolidate, because why would you need two of everything, and everyone. Soon the former HQ has fewer and fewer people.

Fewer people is better than no people, and that is where Chrysler was leading themselves anyway before Fiat bought them out...

Actually the American issue wasn't brands. It was rebranding. Platform sharing is one thing. The Dart, 200, Renegade, and even the Jeep Cherokee all share a platform but they all fill very important market segments. The simple re-branding is gone. The slightly different styles is almost gone. The Durango and the 300 are about the only "duplicate" cars in FCA US. At higher margin cars they probably sell enough of both to keep them along with their counterparts. It doesn't mean that it's bad for Jeep or Ram to have their own brands (I say this knowing Jeep has always been its own brand). The SRT split off was a mistake. But one that didn't really cost them anything.

Depending on the car, it might be more American than some Chryslers anyway. The Hyundai Sonata and Elantra are made in Alabama in one of the more modern & high tech lines in the country. It's a hell of a thing to see if you ever get the chance.

I thought this thread was about the crappy name, not the business implications of their ownership. I agree with you that the business operations in the US will downsize and that is unfortunate.

Maybe eventually but right now, just like when Mercedes used Chrysler to rebuild, it is currently Chrysler that is propping up FIAT. While they might tighten up shop a little it would be stupid to downsize your biggest money maker right now.
