So finally got to install my first SSD last night, after reading all the how to guides and advice I got here it went very smooth! I had picked this drive up for $150 on ebay (it was used) I did all the tweaks and benchmark the drive. Here is what I got:

crystaldiskinfoq.jpg

I guess that is pretty good for a used drive! even better for $150!!

Just how "used" was this SSD? Can you post a crystaldiskinfo (http://crystalmark.info/software/CrystalDiskInfo/index-e.html) screen shot and show us? If they reflashed it with the same/different firmware, then it will show 0 for reads & writes.

not that it should matter much aside from simple curiosity.

And AFAIK, no Sandforce based drive should have smart reset by firmware flashes. Usually takes a destructive flash to do that.

Well, if there was 1000TB of info read/written, then we know why it was so cheap... ;)
But yeah, I was just curious at what it reported. :)

That thing dominates my drive in a couple areas - in write speeds it just crushes my drive by 3x to 5x. Not that I'm unhappy with mine, mind you - but it's good to know that there might be a reason for me to upgrade.

I added that crystaldiskinfo report to the main post. It says it's good so I'll take that as a good sign. Can't make heads or tails of it otherwise

Almost 3.5TB in reads, and 7.5TB in writes in 891 hours? The previous owner sure did use it quite a bit.
Thanks for the info.

No Problem. The drive has been stable here for me 48+ hours and runs darn fast. I don't do extreme amount of writing so for me I think it's $150 well spent :)

This is one of the fastest drives you can get. Your numbers look low actually, what SATA chipset is this connected to?

7,440 GB writes out of a total of 2,560,000 GB (256GB raw NAND x 10,000 P/E cycles for 32nm NAND) or .29% used, nothing to care about at all.

8 GB per hour... looks like it was benched hard?

I have it connected to the Intel SATA III port on my Z68 board. Those test are uncompressed data so I'm sure if I did a 0-fill or 1-fill the write numbers would go up some. Still fast none the less :)

I have no idea what the guy before used the drive to do. He was selling 8 of them on ebay I had already purchased a Sammy 830 that was in transit but seen this deal and figured let me take a chance! Glad I did I couldn't be happier. The only problem I have now is if I should put the Sammy 830 in the wife's laptop, stick it in my machine and find some use for it or sell it :)

I'm just guessing that exdeath was simply pointing out that you seemingly left some performance on the table with that drive since others with nearly identical configs are getting slightly better numbers in benchmarks.

Things to look for if you want to squeeze that last bit out of it.

system OC along with overclocked ram helps raise the sequential roof along with caching speeds and tends to give faster results.
disabling speed-step and c-states in the bios can be advantageous.
setting W7 power options to high-performance.

Of course, each on their own will not have major impact. But it's when you add them all up that the results can change significantly. Plus.. it's fun to play and all settings are easily reversible.

I think I ran those test when the system was at stock clocks but not sure. I have the w7 power otions at high performance already. The speed step and c states are enabled. I'll give it a try when i get home tonight see if there is much difference.

I did compare my benchmarks to 2 review sites and they seem pretty close I just figured the drive being used the performance would be down a tad from brand new out the box.

I made those changes and reran the test here are the results:

Came out better then the first time I ran it. Guess the overclock and taking off the C steps helped some?
