Dear all,

Problem as stated in message title: system crashes a few minutes after game starts playing.

No error messages. Power has to be switched off. Upon re-starting there´s no indication of the system being aware of an error (no message asking if I'd like to go into safe mode in windows or when re-starting the game).

System specs: P4@2.60GHz, 512MB RAM, Radeon 9600Pro, SB Audigy2
Software: WinXP/SP2 fully updated (yesterday), DirectX 9.0c, latest Catalyst (4.12, 6.14.0010.6497, 12/1/2004), latest from creative (5.12.0001.0444, 6/23/2004).

The game is fantastic! Please help me! (and don't tell me to go to the game's forum: been there, done that, got the t-shirt and it's still a no go :(

Thanks for the help.

hl2, codename panzers, far cry: no problem
call of duty: was crashing with previous drivers; haven't tested with new ones

settings: 800x600, 60Hz refresh, shader auto (2.0)

tried EAX and 3d sound on&off, tested sound hw acceleration basic, standard and full; always crashed

call of duty always crashed, even with the drivers that ati said had fixed the problem. only way around was to change card settings. problem is cannor remember anymore what and how to change to have a go :(

a number of people are reporting problems in the game's forum and different people report different solutions. it sounds like there really are a few bugs requiring patching but i am trying to make sure that it's not a prob with my system.

cheers.

Patch?!

The info I got from the official game forum was that VUG was assessing the patch for release.

The link you provided seems to be for a level editor. Does it do more than that?

i almost forgot about this thread . . . .

i had ZERO problems with this great game. Try lowering ALL your settings and see what happens (especially the shaders - the 9600 is the minimum card to run them). ;)

Finally, since you are having problems with OTHER games, i'd sugggest a CLEAN o/s reinstall (easiest on a separate partition on your HD) making SURE your MB (and soundcard & video) drivers are up-to-date . . . . ;)

thanks a lot m8: you solved my problem! shaders down to 1,4 and i'm bashin'em :):D:cool:

for some weird reason the 9600's are not mentioned in any of the shader options...

i thought it might be the shaders . . . . it ran really (really) fast on my 9800xt until i cranked it up to 2.0 . . . . then i had to disable vsynch which gave enough compensation to run it fluidly at 10x7, everything 'max' and 'hi' and 'on' . . . . it slowed further but still OK with 2xAA/4xAF.

Play with the settings to get the best gaming experience for your setup.;)

BTW, this game is AWESOME! it's my GotY.

edit: Why the 60hz refresh rate? Do you have a LCD @ 8x6 or 16x12? . . . . curious . . . .
(60hz is too low for a CRT .. .. my eyes can't take it)

definitely a GREAT game. so far, better than hl2.

will try some more options to see how far I can get it.

I own a Samtron 75E CRT. 60Hz was just another test: it did seem to buy me a little more time playing but I guess it was just an impression, doesn't make sense does it?

what else have u been playing recently, worth buying?

Yeah, the refresh rate should be set higher (~70+hz) for the sake of your eyes . . . . try disabling Vsynch instead (i get very little "tearing" with my system) ;)

Chron of Riddick is the BEST game i played this last year . . . . it's "flaw" is that is is too short. . . my GotY. . . . however, there are several other great FPS (i played this year:

Thief - Deadly Shadows (my favourite of the series - less mandatory 'sneaking'; superb lighting and shadows and incredible audio )

Deus Ex: IW (amazing game in its own right - should NOT be compared to the original . . . works only with the patch; resource hog)

Max Payne: The Fall of MP (as good as the original but the story tells 'too much' . . . runs great on midrange systems)

Far Cry or Painkiller (my next game whichever is "bargain bin" first)

Star Wars, Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outkast . . . i am playing it NOW. A GREAT game with Quake III like decent if dated gfx. It kinda starts slow and like a normal FPS . . . . then you get your lightsaber and Jedi powers and it gets BETTER and BETTER!

last note . . . if you haven't played Doom iii - DON'T buy it. . . . d/l the demo instead (the game does NOT get better . . . just more of the same boring gameplay) . . . and of course HL2 is a solid game.

Happy gaming!
