Might be checking for updated content. If I can't trust a site with net traffic, I don't go there. I either wouldn't go there, or wouldn't worry about it ;^)

Well I just really don't like the idea of sites transmitting data after a load, let alone when I'm not interacting with them, just seems wrong even if it is just a few bytes.

Look at the page source, and see if you can tell what it's doing from that. If I have a Gmail tab open, it updates when I get mail. There's no reason other sites couldn't do something similar with weather,, or other news feeds.

Yea, it's most likely JavaScript checking for new articles. Web pages aren't just static content these days.

Common sense - when not using a tab, close it. An open tab is a hacker's conduit.

That makes no sense, you either trust the site or you don't. If the site or it's ad server is compromised it doesn't matter if you leave the tab open for 1 minute or an hour, the malicious code will still get to run. Well, maybe if you're on a modem you'll close the tab before the bad program gets downloaded, but that would just be dumb luck. =)

Not talking about downloads - am talking about data mining.

Too Many Tabs can apparently suspend tabs; that might help.

yea installed that

the interface could be a bit better though.

it does stop the suspended tabs but really the best solution would be some main control to simply stop a tab dead on the main interface, the X stop/reload button should be full stop, or have a drop down to kill any activity.
