chrome orb vs golden orb

Senior member
Ill be getting a athlon 1ghz (nonoverlocked)

Is there any difference between the chrome orb and golden orb? Which should i get

You should get the Chrome Orb. It dissipates heat much quicklier than does the Golden Orb. IMO, The GOrb just plain farking suxass.

IMHO, of course.

serious? I was checking out the stats of both of them at thermaltake.com and they have the exact same stats hmm

Chrome orb is gonna be AMD approved, the GORB doesn't come close to making the list. I can't give you numbers, but its pretty obvious that the chrome orb be better.

The GORB for Peee3's is fine, don't try the CORB its for Socket A only. Back to the original, don't even mess with the CORB, its still a bitch to install and remove. TAISOL CEK733092 is the only thing I use, cause it works well and costs less AND is AMD approved.

Update, the TAISOL has CHOMERICS T725 Phase Change Compound preapplied, this stuff is also approved by AMD. Just make sure you remove the plastic protector, could be two of em.

They both have identical heatsinks. The chrome one mounts differently than the goldorb and made for AMD chips. It is easier to mount the chrome one. If you look at them closely they got the same identical fan and heatsink with a different mounting clips. So don't speculate what is not there. 🙂
I would wish the fans on these orbs can run more powerful.

If you are getting a SoA Athlon, It would defintly getting the Chrome GOrb, just for compatibilty etc.

The Chrome Orb and Golden Orb both have identical heatsinks, except the Golden Orb is died Golden and the Chrome Orb isn't, since AMD doesn't recommend heatsink dyes.

The difference in performance comes from the RPM of the fans. The Chrome Orb fan spins at a much higher RPM, something like at least twice that of the Golden Orb.

As for installation, the clip is still identical from the Socket462 Golden Orb, but different from the original S370 Golden Orb. I've worked with both the Chrome Orb and the S370 Golden Orb, and while the GORB is really a pain to install and take out, the new Chrome Orbs are much easier to install...not as easy as Globalwins, but getting there.

No ORBs chrome or gold with ABIT Kt7's, they don't fit without mashing capacitors. TAISOL all the way, cheap and AMD approved !!

The fans spin at the same speed.
And to inform you:

<< "Editorial: About the Chrome ORB... While it is less likely to break your Athlon it is still a POOR performer. Despite the bullsh!t posted on one hardware site about having a 10,000 RPM fan and 25CFM it is still the same green label 20CFM fan and heatsink that performed poorly on VERY HOT Athlons. To make an easy comparison look at the thermal resistance of .81 for the Chrome ORB, .81 for the old 462 Golden ORB and compare to .49 for FOP32, .48 Arcticooler, .37 for PAL6035 and .35 for PEP66. Considering most sites are now stiffing people for $17 for this cooler you are much better off getting the $20 FOP32 at almost twice the performance. If you think I have a conflict of interest keep this in mind... Those sites that have flocked back to this product are making more off the Chrome ORB than I am off the FOP32 or the Alpha's for that matter. Just don't be sucked into fads because some site says it looks cool..." >>

- Millisec.com

Now - while I do believe Jim Phillips of Millisec.com knows what he is talking about, I have been talking to other prominant people in the resale business as well that tend to think that Jim is full of sh!t and because of past disagreements with other resellers who do back the Chrome Orb. As a result, take his comparison with a grain of salt - the Chome Orb is a fine performer, regardless of the bullsh!t that Jim is spreading. However don't expect an 11,000 RPM fan...that's just insane. The Chome Orb is a good performer, but your best bet is the Alpha PAL6035. Actually, I just got an e-mail from Millisec saying that they were going to get some in. Also - Vantec has a decent cooler. It is AMD approved, and cheap. But the reason why I recommend it is that if Ian (2cool) himself is using it...it's a safe bet.

Don't even to attempt to buy Thermaltake's Orb's. I bought a 1GHz T-Bird and I had to buy the Golden Orb from the company to get the 1yr warranty. I installed the Golden Orb very carefully, booted up my system and after a few days, my CPU smoked. Why doesn't the company sell an AMD Approved Fan/HS? Very good question. Fighting the company as we speak for a replacement regarding my CPU and a different Fan/HS. F'n sucks.

Everywhere on the Internet, it is being said that the Golden Orb sucks.

Thermaltake never sold the Golden Orb to work under Socket 462. Resellers just assumed it would and sold it like so. It's partially your fault for not doing even the slightest bit of research on how poor that cooler is for socket 462 applications..esp. at 1 GHz.

It's at 2cooltek, at millisec, and all over the forums...and hardocp forums...
