ok, so i normally work sun through thurs and have fri and sat off. christmas and christmas eve are on sat and sun this year so the observed holiday at work is fri and mon. I have already worked my share of holidays this year and so i am not scheduled to work on mon. i am scheduled to work on sun however which is christmas day and not get paid holiday pay because it is a weekend and not the observed holiday. if i just dont show up to work then i wont get paid for sun or mon. what would you do?

If you work on the Holiday you should get paid for it. Talk to your HR people as it sounds like a unique situation.

Per Dickens he closed his business on Christmas day even though he resented doing it.

"You'll want all day to-morrow, I suppose?" said
Scrooge.
"If quite convenient, sir."
"It's not convenient," said Scrooge, "and it's not
fair. If I was to stop half-a-crown for it, you'd think
yourself ill-used, I'll be bound?"
The clerk smiled faintly.
"And yet," said Scrooge, "you don't think me ill-used,
when I pay a day's wages for no work."
The clerk observed that it was only once a year.
"A poor excuse for picking a man's pocket every
twenty-fifth of December!" said Scrooge, buttoning
his great-coat to the chin. "But I suppose you must
have the whole day. Be here all the earlier next
morning."

I wonder what kind of an employer doesnt give you holiday pay for a federal holiday?

Christmas is like the most important Holiday of the Year.

Unless you are a police officer or a fireman or work in the Medical Industry I dont see why you would be working. Even when I worked in a Factory, I got paid Holiday pay for Christmas. Christmas in some places would require Double Overtime.

Give your Boss a Christmas Card thanking him for makind you work on the most holy day of the year for Christians. I know some service industries may be open on Christmas, but you should still be paid holiday pay.

I would go to work, any excuse to not have to go hang out with my family while they celebrate christmas is a good one for me.

I worked at a theatre and never got holiday pay. Also, if you didn't work, you'd be fired.

if they are giving holiday pay then you deserve it for working on the actual holiday

servers that have to be running 24/7/365 also have to be monitored and supported 24/7/365 :)

It's a tough break, but it's your job.
You may have gotten the short end this year but you'll likely get the better end next year.
I have kids, but I'd work the Christmas thing around that the best I could.
If I didn't have kids, I wouldn't like going but I'd be there.

wouldn't it depend on the type of server though?

e mail and web i can understand, but like a storage server used for workers to save all their stuff to. that can't afford to be off for a few hours? especially if their are no workers to use it?

and this is a genuine question- how often do they go out or power down because of failure?

you couldn't just go there make sure everything is running alright and go home?

some companies have features on pagers or cell phones that when a UPS kicks on and/or something else bad happens it sends a page or message (don't know how expensive that is though)
