Christmas preparations in May.

For Christmas this year, I am going to give my 10 year old son his first real computer. Provided he can build it.

To that end, I would like to give him some basic info as to how differnet computer parts interact. Are there any really simple guides? I would expect him to be able to do the bulk of the assembly work and to research his parts with my help.

Following that, I was thinking of making a simple 20 question test or something that he can use to test/demonstrate his ability.

Stuff like-

What are two common anti-static meausres and why do we need them?

"Memory (RAM) is to a Hard Drive as a notepad is to a library" True or False.

BIOS stands for:

If a computer was a human body, which part would be considered the brain?

Why is proper system cooling important?

So, any useful "kid" guides? Any questions you can think of?

u want a free p3 to do a try out first ?
I may take you up on that for a july test run 😛 Thanks for the offer. I think I may have a socket A up in the attic. Either way, he'll definitely have something to break down first.
Wow 10 years old sounds a little young to be doing this...Well g/l to you.
You think its too young? I dunno, its not rocket science. I know its not like making a PB&J but he has 7 months to learn it.

Yeah, give him stuff to play with. A lot of the times, you only learn by what you break. Some of the questions may be relevant to the task at hand, but I don't know how much it would help him with actually building a computer.
