Christmas help needed: Lego Marvel Super Heroes PC

I bought my son and daughter the new Lego Game - DVD boxed version for Christmas, to play on their non-Internet connected PC.

This morning I opened it up and started installing. I thought it would take 15 minutes or so. I was astounded to see that the game, which was installing from a retail purchased DVD, was telling me to sign up for a Steam account -which I have always avoided. This despite it not saying anything about Steam or Internet being required to complete an install. I was able to get a wireless N dongle to temporarily connect the PC to the internet.

It spent around 8 minutes downloading Steam, then installing it. Then it spent 25 minutes installing the Lego Marvel game. Then it spent another 15 minutes updating the game, and we were finally in business. (actually, I also had to download driver support for my Thrustmaster GPX Lightback Xbox 360 controllers, since this is an XP system)

My daughter started playing, and video cutscenes & such were going smoothly. She figured out how to play ok as Iron Man, but then she moved ahead a bit, and it became a split screen. We figured out that Hulk was left behind, and evidently she could not move ahead without him?? The box did not say 2 players required, but that seemed to be the only thing we could think of. There were 2 characters on screen, and the second one was not tagging along with her, so we hooked up a second GPX Lightback USB controller, thinking that it would let my son play as Incredible Hulk, and then they could advance forward together on the screen.

Well, although Windows XP appears to detect the second controller, nothing happens when my son pushes buttons and tries all of the different control pads/sticks on the controller. My daughter can move around a little bit, but can't advance through the game, so for all practical purposes the game is unplayable for them this Christmas morning.

Anyone have any ideas for anything else we can try so that they can play the game? They are rather disappointed. Thanks for any help you can offer!

For most PC games that allow the use of controllers (360/etc), they MUST be plugged in and on before starting the game. That might be the cause of your son trying to play the second character, and nothing happening.

When your daughter is playing and can't advance, can she hit Y (switch character) button, to gain control of the off screen character? Many times there are little puzzles where you must do this, moving one character to a spot, so another can proceed.

All the Lego games can be played single player; sounds like the game is detecting a second player joining if the above doesn't work. Maybe an issue with your drivers?

That was it - thanks so much! After rebooting, they were able to play the game as 2 player, with both controllers. I had forgotten about often needing to reboot XP for some things to fully work.

Not that it matters now, but in the future you need to carefully read the back of the game case. I'd put large sums of money on the back cover mentioning Steam. This type of thing pops up often where people claim there was "no mention of steam or on-line requirement", but then when they actually read what it says on the back they find what they missed before.

Hi GunsMadeAmericaFree,

It seems you had the same problem I have.
The son of my friend bought this game without realising it requires internet connection. If it is only needed for installing, that's okay, we can do a temporary net connection. Could you tell me whether the game works or not without interet connection after its installed? It would be a huge help to know.

Thanks in advance.

Once you have the game initially installed you can put steam in offline mode and you won't need to connect again.
