You know I prefer to vacation in the islands. Athens itself is not worth more than a day. Nothern and western mainland Greece is quite nice, but again, the islands rock. I spend most of my time on the island of Naxos. Santorini is a photographers paradise. IOS is the party island for the college-aged (in the summer). The Ionian islands are also amazing: Corfu and Kefalonia are faves.

If you should head out to the islands, take the Helas Flying Dolphin high-speed ferry. Spend a little more to get to the islands faster.

Edit: Istanbul is on my wish list. From what I've heard, it's similar to Greece, but cheaper. Greece, although inexpensive once you are there, has gotten more expensive since adopting the Euro.

oooh. looks nice. i need to do some hardcore saving for the next couple of months if i want to be able to go to japan for vacation.
