There are apps that don't work fully with all versions of Android. And the latest os update has some problems. Its not a big deal for a tech oriented person, but its more like Windows than it is like Apple's ecosystem, which doesn't have so many versions and devices to deal with.

Name a significant app that doesn't work with modern versions of Android.

In the years I have owned Android devices I can think of all of two cases, Chrome which requires ICS or newer for obvious reasons and the full version of Adobe Flash which was only offered for Froyo or newer and never promoted as being a feature of Eclair.

As much as it sucks, kids that age want to fit in with everyone else. If she asks for an iPad, it's because all of her friends have one. If you go and get her a Kindle Fire, suddenly she's different from them.

Just something to consider. My little sister (9) is asking for an iPod, and it's because her best friend has one and they want to Facetime. I'm not sure that there is even a decent Android alternative.

ipad is good. My niece always use my ipad, and I give him some kiddie educational apps, well it's always depends with her peers

I've never had iOS crash on my iPhone and I've run multiple beta versions, iOS apps crash including ones from Apple but the OS, not once. I've had Android crash but it could have been my fault as I rooted it and was playing around with some stuff. Actually I guess my AppleTV has crashed a few times but it's jailbroken and it could have been XBMC that took it down.

Now my old Blackberry, that thing used to crash and reboot once a month.

When gifting another person I try to give them things they want, rather than things I want. My son prefers android devices exclusively & I respect that preference when buying him gifts.

The kid wants an ipad? I'd check the refub store at apple.com regularly, the refurbs get new batteries & back covers, they look just like new when they arrive & get the same warranty from apple, you can find substantial savings there.
