Christmas came early...Netflix to offer offline viewing

Perfect. I use my iPad for Netflix a lot, but it always annoys me I can't bring my Netflix with me.

BTW, I wonder if this makes it easier for people to bootleg the files. Not that I really care since I have a Netflix subscription and intend to keep it, but I've always wondered about that.

Also, if they do bring it to Windows, I am guessing it would only be Windows 10 with Kaby Lake or later. I don't know anything about the DRM technology, but I'm guessing they may somehow incorporate the same DRM technology they are using for 4K video.

This will also make it way easier for kids' shows. Keep those kids' quiet on the plane with episodes of Chuggington (assuming they get the rights for downloads for that).

EDIT:

It seems a few people are saying that it's only SD for them. And note from a Wired article that Narcos is 2.3 GB for an entire season, which definitely doesn't sound like HD. If so, that's a bit disappointing, but still, that's better than nothing.

Can anyone confirm?

A 48 minute long episode of Stranger things was ~ 250 meg on my phone. Would be interested to see if that changes based upon the hardware it's installed in. Netflix is pretty damn good at managing compression and getting a lot of out of their streams. I'm sure they are using a very efficient compression here. Not sure how well that would scale up if you chromecasted or did an HDMI output of that source.

Haven't tried to download anything but I did read you can set the quality like you can with amazon. with amazon I typically go with the smaller file size which looks just fine on a tablet.

Have you tried changing the quality? In the app settings on the Android app, I can set download quality to standard or high quality.

Edit:
As a test, I set mine at high quality and a 1 hr episode of Sense8 is a little under 1 GB.

Great but doesn't really change my life. I have unlimited data and I stream whatever I want, whenever I want on my phone.

That being said, it's good for flying. this I will keep in mind.

Would be nice if you could change storage location to SD card. I have about 90 gigs available on there and 6 on internal storage.

Sorry folks, I meant not being able to search their inventory before you are a subscriber. I wanted to look and see what they had, determine if it was worth signing up and then decide. I had heard nightmares of trying their free 30-day deal and getting them to cancel it. Homey don't play those games. Imagine trying to shop Amazon without being able to search prior to creating an account with a credit card.
