Christmas bonus

There is a fundamental flaw in our company's bonus structure, and because of the oil field boom in my region, scores of people have been leaving the company for more lucrative positions elsewhere. Well, they finally figured something out, and instead of waiting until next year, they approved bonuses for this year ... nothing extreme, but the extra $1500 is definitely welcome this time 🙂

The money will be spent on a trip to Ireland and Scotland next summer, which will encompass the Open (golf tournament) in Scotland

Anyone else feelin' fortunate this morning?

Ok, so I was hoping for some more positive responses ... but I'm still happy. I've decided that at least a third of it is going to be siphoned away from the trip, and put towards my 4 month old daughter's RESP (registered educations savings plan)

im not at the grade to get bonuses, but the oil boom is giving an overall raise for evreyone next quarter.

but they gave us all 1000$ herman miller mirra chairs today!

We get half of our semi-annual profit sharing in December, 7.5% of annual salary. It's not so much of a bonus as a regular part of our compensation, but this is a good time of the year to get it.

Damn, I wish I got 7.5% ... even if I was expecting it 🙂 I figured mine out to be approximately 2.25%.

I heard it is really bad with the oil boom in Alberta that even McDonalds is paying $13.25/hr to flip burgers with $1000 retention bonus after 3 months and profit sharing.

Everyone is having to up the ante to keep employee. If you're a tradesperson, and not working for/contracting to the oil industry, your wages are probably 1/2 of what they could be. In my town there are help wanted signs everywhere because unskilled workers can make way too much money doing grunt labor with oilfield supply companies.

The bonus for staying 3 months and profit sharing etc. are not just wild stories ... they have to do that sort of thing right now. It'll be interesting to see what happens when the boom slows ...

Another question ... the bonuses everyone is talking about ... are they built rigidly into contracts, so that you know you're getting x% of your salary if you're not a screwup, or are they profit sharing arrangements?

I am in business development. My bonus is based on my team reaching its targets. I can (more or less) calculate it day to day...
