Althanasius:

We are all trapped by something. George Bush is trapped much worse than any welfare mother ever will be. Ditto for Gore.

I'm also trapped by many notions like the importance of hard work, intellectual integrity, truth (whatever the h*ll that means) and beauty. I can also be very cold and hard when I think I'm right. I recognize a few of my many failings, but the older I get the more I get like myself. :p

I only bring up Sweden when I discuss Socialist ideals for the simple fact that people start to foam at the mouth and start talking about the oppressive regime in the USSR.
Mentioning Sweden tends to calm people down a little (or at least wipe their mouths).

I too doubt that Sweden is more "biblical" than the US. However, if one were to start looking at other governments instead of the US' and USSR's, I think a world of possibilities would open up to them, possibilities that may be more in line with their religious philosophy. Most people are too afraid to step outside their little world and actually think deeply about tough issues (i.e. notice how we are the only ones discussing this issue? Most of the folks on this board seem to follow rather than think.... but then again, a lot of folks here seem young and have little life experience).

I agree that we are all trapped, to varying degrees. Obviously, I believe that a genuine Imitation of Christ (see Thomas a'Kempis) would set us free.

For me, the "entrapment," at least for Christians, comes when we use the Word to support our preconceptions and agendas instead of allowing the Word to tear down strongholds of thinking that "keep out the knowledge of God (see 2 Cor 10:3-5). Everyone has their own strongholds. I am no exception.

To me, the only fully sane and free human who ever lived was Jesus of Nazareth. He ended up being rejected by all of the political parties of his day. That rejection of the Word was truly insane.

Conclusion: politics breed insanity ;)
