A Sudanese court has sentenced a Christian woman to death for renouncing Islam, her lawyer said Thursday. Meriam Yehya Ibrahim, 27, was convicted by a Khartoum court this week of apostasy, or the renunciation of faith.

The court considers her to be Muslim.

She also was convicted of adultery.

Ibrahim's lawyer Haram Othman told CNN that her legal team will appeal the verdict within 15 days.
According to the rights group Amnesty International, she was convicted of adultery because her marriage to a Christian man was considered void under Sharia law. She was sentenced to 100 lashes for the second crime.

Ibrahim is eight months pregnant and is in custody with her 20-month-old son, according to Amnesty International, which considers her a prisoner of conscience.

Way to get people to stop hating your religion, Muslims.

Ahh yes, the anti-persecution pro gay militia will be eerily silent on this issue. "I hate persecution.....provided the victim is one of my own..."

I am starting to think that you are mentally retarted.

I think i'm right on this if this is your line of thought that gays are "one of their own" when it comes to Muslims who would stone gays to death without a trial.

You are either insane or a hypocrite, take your pick.

Like to play the victim much?

Sentencing anyone to death for the religion is just wrong. Telling someone their marriage is invalid because the parties are considered to be of different faiths is just wrong. Basically this entire case is wrong on so many fronts.

Went from victim play to disgusting retard in one post for me.

This fucking retard think that fundamentalist Muslim extremists are the friends of gays...

I mean... fuck... that takes a LOT of insanity to proclaim that.

It's almost admirable.

Why are you trying to be a victim here? Oppression based on religion is horrible no matter who is on the receiving end. I would hope that events such as these would both provoke revulsion and those responsible and give people a moment to reflect on how that might apply to our own lives

She knowingly broke the law. Why should I feel sorry for some callous criminal? Kill that wise and beautiful woman! Stop wasting taxpayers' money on some criminals like her. She committed the crime knowing the consequences, kill her! Punish the wrongdoer.

In all seriousness, though, we need to do away with religion somehow or reform it. The worse places in the world to live are Theocracies, as human rights violations are an hourly occurrence it seems.

Are you bipolar, it seems that every so often you say something like this but then you spend a lot of time defending religious practice being in charge of law of society.

It's not just that, at times you can have a nice discussion and then you just flip and fill the forum with vitriol for no good reason. I have participated in a thread where you both agreed with me and then disagreed with me on the exact same thing.

I agree with you on this assessment but i doubt you will in a little while.

A better idea would be to get rid of extremism.

Too much of x can kill you, and sometimes other people.

I'd argue that any part of a 2k year old belief that impacts anything what so ever about you is detrimental.

We are born with empathy, the only way to remove it is religion.

Körä över gräns till Norra Sverige. Fråga säljare: "Talar du finska?" Köpa snus. Körä tillbaka hem. Bästa. Ingen gränsen mellan vännerna. :)

Du vinner inte i år. :sneaky:

BBC has a much better summary of the story.

  1. her father was Muslim, her mother was Christian
  2. she was raised by her mother, father was absent
  3. considers herself Christian, but law is religion is passed paternally (retarded, i know)
  4. she was given a chance to renounce and refused
  5. lower court judge handed the sentence, but chances for appeal
  6. only one actual hanging since ~1980

Might be done Sudan/South Sudan thing going on as well, but don't recall.

Aside from being barbaric, also shows how paternal and backwards the laws are. This is an area of the world who also "curcumsizes ” women also.
Also reports of the of female trafficking and forced marriages. A true hellhole for women.

They are both wrong and not equivalent. Any attempt to make them so is ridiculous as is any attempt to reduce that difference . Ask a gay couple if they would rather have a wedding cake from a particular baker or to be executed I'm willing to bet they'd agree wirh me. But that's our little bit of "special" to do that here.
