A man who told police he made a pipe bomb to attack an abortion clinic was arrested Thursday, shortly before the device went off in a friend's home while authorities tried to disable it, according to court documents.

No one was injured by the explosion, which started a fire that burned the top floor of the Riverdale home, officials said.

Some friends of Robert F. Weiler Jr. had tipped off police about the 25-year-old's alleged plans Wednesday night.

Weiler then called the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and surrendered to state troopers at a rest stop on Interstate 68 just after midnight. Investigators found a handgun and ammunition in his car, officials said.

According to an ATF affidavit, Weiler planned to bomb an abortion clinic in Greenbelt and use a .40-caliber handgun he had stolen from a friend to "shoot doctors who provided abortions."

Weiler faces four federal counts including making a destructive device and possessing an illegal handgun. He was being held Thursday.

Phone messages left at Weiler's home were not returned. A car in the driveway had a frame around the front license plate that read "Choose Life" and "God is pro-Life."

A woman who answered the phone at the Greenbelt clinic said they had not heard of the threat. In 1989, 80 abortion opponents were arrested for trespassing in a demonstration outside the clinic.

Nah, both of them are whackjobs, but feel free to defend terrorists the same.

The world would be better off without either.

I don't think you christers get the fact that people do not like either of the whackos, muslims or xtrians, there is no difference between the violence either religion is capable of besides the name of the god they kill for.

Steeple is finally correct in something: Violent fanaticism, in any case, on any side, needs to be destroyed.

That said, for every 1 whacko Christian, there are probably 50,000 fanatical Muslims. I would be REALLY interested in reading an accurate number in that regard. Does anyone know of a source that may have attempted to calculate a rough estimate of the number of fanatical Muslims in the entire world? if so, please link to it.

What's the point? Do you mean we Christians need to close the whacko-gap?

Bush and friends are working hard to close this gap daily whipping the biggest bigots into a frenzy of hate.

Makes me wonder how this warrantless wiretapping business would apply.

If it is "only for terrorism" would we expect to see people associated with Operation Rescue or other outspoken anti-abortion groups spied upon by the NSA?

Cat Stevens is blacklisted from entry to the US because he donated to a suspect Muslim charity. By the same standard, would not almost anyone donating to an evangelical Baptist church be under suspicion of supporting the bombing of abortion clinics?

I suppose someone will be quick to say "not during the Bush administration," and my hunch is that that is correct. But this stuff is a slippery slope. What happens if/when there is a pro-choice Democrat in the oval office? If the precedent has been established for widespread warrantless wiretapping "in cases of terrorism or suspected terrorism" and those cases are determined at the sole discretion of the president, it would seem that Hillary (to pick a presidental monicker not quite at random) would be on firm ground keeping the entire anti-abortion movement under electronic surveillance.

People, do you really want to go there?

They condemn it in public, but in private? Maybe zenny should answer this.

If you listen to big evangelical christian leaders it's a whole other story.

I suspect you are incorrect. In fact, I'd be willing to bet that Christians are almost on par violent extremism-wise. The only difference is that Christians don't usually have to resort to terrorism to make their point, they are the dominant religion in the world right now as far as the ability to use force goes.

I realize this might be a stretch, but think about it for a second. If all the Christians fanatics in the US like Jerry Fallwell did not have a semi-official sway over the government of the most powerful country in the world, I'd bet dollars to donuts they'd be urging their followers to strap bombs to themselves and blow them up.

It's kind of a different way of looking at it, I admit, but you brought up the idea of beliefs...not actions.

I like how totally you guys missed the point.

Steeplerot was making the point that every time there is a terrorist attack by a Muslim, the whole "Muslim terrorist" stereotype is beaten like a dead horse. But God forbid anybody calls someone a "Christian terrorist". And judging by your responses, I think Steeplerot did a very good job of making that point.

Hate is a terrible thing especially when one uses their religion in order to justify it like they are doing God some sort of favor, but how do those without religion justify their hate?

I dunno, maybe if there were atheists blowing up churches becasue people are practicing their right to free worship in this country you should ask, but I have yet to hear of one.

Care to show me where christians are being terrorized?

Would the terrorizing only count if it is coming from atheists or atheistic governments?

ahh, i can always count on Earl to dig into is palehorse.doc file and call me out! lol.. that said, the reason I can't ask one of my teachers is because I've never seen such a calculation done; hence my request for a link to any source that may have said data...

it really would be very interesting to get an estimate of the total number of genuinely violent fanatical muslims in the world. At least then I could start checking them off...

;)
