Christian school fires pregnant woman over premarital sex

In October, Teri James says her supervisor at San Diego Christian College called her to her office and got straight to the point: Was James pregnant?

James, 29, of El Cajon, Calif., was indeed pregnant – and she was also unmarried, a violation of school rules, according to the lawsuit she filed in San Diego County superior court. She says she was fired because, as the termination letter included in the suit stated: “Teri engaged in activity outside the scope of the Handbook and Community Covenant that does not build up the college’s mission.”

Speaking by phone with her lawyer, Gloria Allred, James said she felt humiliated.

Also insulting, James said, was that after firing her, the school offered a job to her then-fiancé – they are now married – even though it was known that he, too, engaged in premarital sex. He did not accept the job, she said.

Women have not won a single case yet.

Looks like they will be stripped of voting rights soon and probably have to cover their heads as well.

Women NEVER win cases. Just look at divorce court...........+

If she broke her contract then she should be terminated, simple as that. if she wasnt sch a slut none of this would have happened.

She worked for a private business which had rules of conduct that she agreed to abide by and when she ignored those rules she broke the private agreement she willing signed with her employer.

Remove pregnancy from the argument and insert the clause they had about behavior dealing with prejudice based on race, sex or socioeconomic status. If she had violated that clause would you still be up in arms over this? Probably not and you'd use the contract she signed against her and rightfully so because she willingly signed it and agreed to abide by it while being employed by this private school. In the end the moral of this story is never sign such private agreements until you've read them period.

San Diego Christian College asks that its employees sign its “community covenant,” a two-page contract that asks its community, which includes employees and about 500 students on-site, to abstain from drugs, alcohol and tobacco and “abusive anger, malice, jealousy, lust, sexually immoral behavior including premarital sex, adultery, pornography and homosexuality, evil desires and prejudice based on race, sex or socioeconomic status.”

It pays to read WTF you are signing. That fine print can be a real bitch.

Now, use that reasoning and apply it to explain why they would then offer the job to her fiancé who engaged in the same activity.

At no point should anyone be able to have any say about when adult, consenting individuals can have sex with each other, the very notion that any contract could have words to such effect included in it should be completely alien and repugnant to any freedom-loving individuals, and should not be condoned or excused.

Employment contracts having sway over your own private life is fascism, in its purest form. Do you want to live under the yoke of fascism?

This is just terrible and awful, and should be completely banned of course.

The problem is this is a christian school and the courts have said this is fine as it's a moral issue.

It reminds me of the story when a woman took her leave to have a kid and she comes back to find the school won't let her back as she was single at the time.

It sucks but sadly they knew it ahead of time.

I think banning homosexuals from getting the job or firing women when they get pregnant should be illegal in general because it opens up to all kinds of abuse that people are going to accept and underwrite anyway because sometimes the alternative is having no job at all (that's why law should force this stuff), but with the worker protection being what it is, she's got no case.

Yeah, and the bible belongs in church, it's not the law of the land. Contracts having words to these effects should be illegal, it's not for the employer to dictate how other adults live their lives in their own free spare time. Having sex in school, on the job - by all means, fire away. But wanting to poke your nose into employees' lives outside of working hours? Go to hell!

It's not just about her doing what she wants in her own time. Now that she's pregnant and not married, there is no way for her to hide that at work. Thus, she really would be bringing her personal behavior into work.

She probably had evil desires and lust too.

As much as I hate organized religion and the stupid shit they preach (and rarely practice), your point is a valid one and would explain why the boy friend was ok to hire.

Perhaps premarital sex is a protected right that cannot be discriminated against. :hmm:

The woman apparently did.

Though I find it interesting that you apparently want the government to force your beliefs on morality on private entities. I thought only the religious right wanted to do that?

Now, use that reasoning and apply it to explain why they would then offer the job to her fiancé who engaged in the same activity.

Because he did not engage in pre-marital sex after signing a contract saying he wouldn't.

Perhaps after his gf got pregnant he saw the error of his ways and repented his sins :D

Seems pretty fair to me. Fire her for setting an immoral example. This is kind of a slippery slope. Where do you start and where do you end. So if someone has a divorce you going to fire them also? If they smoke or drink do you fire them? Good luck looking for teachers that arent immoral.

There are all kinds of other reasons in contracts that people get fired for. In St. Louis, MO, you have to live in the city limits to be hired as a police officer. What is the difference?

It is not like you can hide the fact that you are preagnant and not married??? So this isnt just about sex it is an example for the children.

As Liberals would say, "For the Children!"

Well I bet they were just hoping that her boyfriend fit in better. That way they could add another member to their circle jerk pretty while surrounding little boys.

A lot of you are a bunch of morons. I like how you totally skipped the part about her husband when trying to defend the school you tools.

They didn't fire her for being pregnant they fired her for not being married while having sex. Now it might be harder to prove a man has been having sex but in this case it's pretty fucking obvious and yet he still gets offered the job. How fucking stupid are you people. Seriously if you think this is ok then just do the world a favor and fucking off yourself.

When liberals say they don't mean it though. What they really mean is "For the woman".

Did the husband have pre-marital sex after signing a contract that he wouldn't? :hmm:
