It's really sad that adults get so into high school football.
Yeah the kids are still going to serve their sentence, but the judge gave them preferential treatment beacuse they're football players, and I think that's wrong.
No, we are just being "pedantic"...

god i hope so. one of the kids life is going to be very bad. with a broken neck and brain damage.
from another article
Roby nearly lost his right leg in the crash, and is facing his 11th surgery in the next few weeks, his mother said yesterday.
Robert Roby?s passenger, 17-year-old Dustin Zachariah, was on life support for several days and had broken bones, two collapsed lungs and brain damage. He now has the cognitive ability of a sixth-grader, his mother, Kathy Piper, said.

This is so asinine. Gee, I wonder if John Mark Karr will be able to put off his life sentence a few months to take that vacation he's always wanted to take. I mean, he'll do the time eventually, right?
Those kids need to be punished, and punished NOW. A good punishment? Time served PLUS no more high school football. Maybe that will actually teach those jackass kids a lesson. Also, the judge should be kicked out of his position and should never be allowed in a courtroom again.

These are unique circumstances. I would hope that the judge would defer punishment for other students as well. They need to serve their time, but missing 60 days of school will put someone on a fast track to loser-ville.

Come on people, obviously a major majority did not play football in highschool, so that's why the backlash.
Stop bringing up stupid things (Karr murdered someone FFS, not a prank).
Yes the kids fvcked up and the judge made a stupid descision, but that is how it is in big football towns.

They should be kicked off the team, thus solving the problem.
Simple solution and if the coach had any balls that's what he would do.

A stunt like this would've gotten our asses kicked off, that's for sure.

You (unintentionally) raised an interesting point here... their punishment was not defered until next summer, it was defered until after football season. They will still be missing two months of school. But hey, at least they don't have to miss football season! That right there should be proof enough that the judge's focus was on football and not what is best for these kids.
This is not about vengeance, this is about fairness. It was just a prank gone bad, but the prank had unintended consequences. One of those unintended consequences was that two guys were seriously injured. One of those unintended consequences is that these kids will have to spend 60 days in a juvenile detention center. But missing football? Oh that's too much.

They were on drugs too?
"I've never seen anything that has been so much an issue in the community," said Arch Rodgers, principal of 670-student Kenton High School. "The worst part is this has drug out so long and the longer it drug out, the more it created friction in the community."
Stuff it, who the hell writes for CNN, and did they ever get taught English at school?
The quotation marks means it's a quote. Evidently the Principal of Kenton HS needs to sit in on a few english classes with ya.
I personally don't see how anyone can argue in the judges favor. The boys had to know they were breaking the law in blocking a highway, knew it was gonna cause "a commotion." Whether or not they intended to hurt anyone is irrelevant. They knowingly broke the law. That means go to jail, do not pass go, do not collect $200, and most definitely do not finish the season of football.
One of my dad's favorite phrases is "If your gonna do the crime, you gotta be willing to do the time." Hopefully they think about that next time they plan their "stunts."
Edit: Doesn't this fly right in the face of many school's "no pass no play" policies?
"I got a 69 and can't play , but billy commited a crime that caused brain injury, and he's starting?"![]()

All it is doing is sending a message to other people that the football players are special and the law will make special time for them.
The judge realizes that although the boys made a stupid mistake the chances of someone getting seriously hurt were low and they were unlucky to have caused such a bad accident.
No reason to ruin their lives over a stupid prank. Everyone has done something that could have resulted in serious physical harm to someone else. The kids will do their time and that is that.
so no reason to ruin their lives. yes lets ignore the fact that they have caused permanant brain injury to someone over this prank.
It was a one in a million if not more chance that this critical accident happened. If it were more serious they would have gotten more jail time, but hell their prank only resulted in 60 days. That is 2 months and they will probably be out in less than 30 days with good behavior.
