I'm hoping this didn't happen with Anand and Brian. Not that I think they covered or would have covered Apple any differently (at least not intentionally).

Didn't know who he was until today. If he was working there at the same time as working at Apple, well, that's just dumb. A little bit of bad press too for Apple, although I'm sure nobody will care, cuz well.. nobody in the greater public knows who he is. However, I do wonder if this is grounds for dismissal from Apple. It should be noted that John Gruber states that Ziegler is not listed in the Apple company directory.

BTW, which Brian?

I read The Verge pretty regularly and post in their forums. Noticed he'd been kind of marginalized for about a year, I suspect part of wanting a more diverse group of employees, I mean he was out of touch for 2 flipping months? That says a lot about the culture and management at The Verge, and how Chris was being treated.

As far as Anand and Brian, they were pretty tight. And Anand being the boss, I can't imagine there was an HR type problem with them working at Apple, just the ethics component, and really, who cares?

Not a fan of the direction they've taken (The Verge), they're all click bait articles, and focused on "lifestyle"

I doubt Anand and Brian had much of clue that they'd be going to Apple until they were given offers. Also, did they have a pause between jobs, or immediately start working at Apple? I don't think it'd be an ethical issue if they left as soon as they accepted, even if it meant spending weeks without a job.

Also: I'm definitely not a fan of the recent trend of websites devolving from a focus on one news category (such as tech or business) into "anything for a click." It looks good for your SEO, but it's terrible for building a reliable base of readers who know what to expect when they show up. Are you going to see the new iPhone review? Or will you see a casting choice for a new movie? Or the latest cute pet video? This isn't to say that generalist sites shouldn't exist... but if your site is supposed to have a focus, stick to it, y'know?

Sounds like he flaked out sometime around July and may have just been drawing pay without doing any actual work. Still obviously not good (makes the Verge look far worse for having an editor in the wind for almost two months) but less of a big deal than if he was still putting out articles during that time.

A lot of sources are reporting that he's not working for Apple any more either though or he's not in the employee directory. Curious to know what the story is either way as it apparently means Apple canned him pretty quickly as well or he's working on something secret enough that no one's saying anything.

The statement from Nilay Patel is rich considering the slack crap. They were putting up slack articles every couple of weeks that read more like advertisements and got called out when it was discovered that a member of their board and a huge investor is the same at slack. I called them out for not putting a disclaimer multiple times and my posts always got deleted. At least Engadget has the decency to put up a disclaimer every time an article even mentions Verizon.

Then again the verge pretty much went downhill the second Topolsky left.

I suppose it's time to remove it form my feedly. I've been thinking on cutting back anyway, and theverge was on a shortlist.
