I am getting a new computer and have been out of the MB community since the 8k7a(remember them). Now im putting in an XP chip. Not sure but prolly a 2400+ or smaller and need to know what borad to get. I need something that is more future proof and could accept a different chip or an upgrade next year. I keep hearing upsides and downs, but i dont intent to oc at least not for a couple of months when i get bored but what board has the least amount of probs, good features almost no conflicts with soundcard(if i even need one) 8x agp blah blah blah. Thanx all. I need answers soom. im ording parts tommorow.

PS: What board for each chipset as well. I need to narrow down my choices fast. Want something around $100

Nforce2 hands down, dont listen to anyone who says different. If you want to buy a board around $100, you can get the Epox 8RDA+ @ Mwave

you will never be able to upgrade to the latest and almost greatest next year no matter what board you get today (intel or amd) both are switching socket types, and AMD is going to Hammer which uses completely different architexture.

get pc2700(or 3200 if you have the money) with a thoroughbred B amd athlon xp processor which if you get 3200 will allow for higher o/c's and wont be limited to memory.

Onboard audio is excellent, and i think it can be compared to SB live output which is beyond any other onboard sound.

any nforce2 board is a good choice they all are about as problem free as you can get and basically are better than any other mobo you can get

Look here for a review of almost every nforce 2 board

The nVidia Audio present on the Epox 8RDA+ has sound quality better than Audigy1 and near Audigy2. Ultra low CPU utilization also.:)

It`s really subjective,I recommended to a friend an Epox 8RDA+ since he wanted a new board with decent 5.1 sound to replace his old SB Live, guess what he put the SBLive back in the 8RDA+ , he prefered the SB Live sound "you can`t win them all" .

I would go with the nforce2 over the KT400.

I would be interested to know exactly why he went back to the SBLive. It's possible he just couldn't get the nVidia Audio configured correctly. Just a conjecture ofcourse.;)

KidChaos ,he was not happy with the treble and bass output,he was using digital output, with the SB Live sound card installed he could use the Creative software to get the right treble/bass balance ,but with the nForce control panel sound software he was not happy even after adjusting the sound balance on the 9 band EQ software. He did say the the treble and bass detail were too low so he reinstalled his SB Live card.

He did have some crackling problems as well but I think he got that fixed.

It was a clean install of XP Pro as well.

I'm almost positive that you could run the 2400 at 266 mhz fsb and then run the pc 2700 at the 333 mhz fsb on the nforce2 with out ocing.

I just got the ASUS A7V8X (KT400), and had all sorts of stability problems, and then I got a MSI K7N2 (??) nforce2 board, and it works much better. I didn't get the sound to work, but I might have been able to later, I just disabled it and put in my SBLive, since there was no joystick port anyway on the MSI board.
