Sys Specs:

tnt2 m64 (APG)
awe64 (ISA)
503+ w/ amd k6-2+ 450 @ 500
win98se
256mb ram

When the mpeg is in full screen and mono sound, the sound is NOT choppy. If i switch to sterio, the sound gets choppy. As i reduce the view size to a very very very very small size, while in sterio mode, the choppyness fades and sound improves.

I have no IRQ conflicts
I have no dma problems
all drivers seem to be current

i have a new video card coming (Radeon VE with tv out), should i look for a new sound card. What kind? I don't want anything that going to break my wallet.

Thanks
eric

yeah, ISA sound card is NOT good for your purposes

a nice pci card would help you out tremendously. i like the sblive value's..but there's a lot of others out there.

listen to mp3s (altec lansing with a sub box)
play occasional games (not hardcore)
watch mpeg movies (occasionally)

creative makes soooo many variations of their live product. would a sound blaster pci128 be fine?

thanks,
Eric

The PCI128 is based on the same chipset as the Ensoniq AudioPCI was. When I used one of those they yielded VERY good sound quality and awesome compatibility. The are lacking in features though (ie, no hardware wavetable voice, no multistream playback, etc). If you want one of these though go to e-bay or the forums and do a search for audiopci. The going price seems to be about $12, which isn't bad at all. If you want a better card then therphilips cards are good (Rythmic edge is 2 speakers and is about $30, Seismic is 4 speakers and about $50, and Accoustic is 5.1 and about $70). The TB Santa Cruz is also very good for $70, and the Hercules Fortissimo II runs about $60 (I just ordered the Fortissimo II so I'll post my opinions on it after it comes in). Judging from your system specs you don't really want top of the line though, so I'd say to go with either the AudioPCI or the Philips Rythmic Edge.
