choppy mpeg playback

I'm getting really choppy mpeg playback with windows media player, avi's work fine, as do asf files. Also, trying to FF an mpeg will crash media player, whereas it acts normal with avi's and asf's. I've tried upgrading to mediaplayer 7 (yuck) and still no luck.

celeron 533@880
128 megs gen pc 100
viper II video
13gb 5400 rpm quantum bigfoot hdd
Win2K

...any ideas?
