Choppy Laptop video

I am trying to watch a video from my harddrive. The video is very choppy. I turned off everything I could. The laptop is a IBM Thinkpad 390x.
 
more info required: os, memory, speed, does the video run fine elsewhere? what codec does the video use? do other videos play smooth?

256mb ram
XP Pro

Divx 3.11, Divx 5 and xVid installed
Using Windows Media Player 8 to play

Downloaded the video from a friend and it runs fine.
