Choppy Gameplay

Just this weekend a new problem started happening for me. Every three seconds or so, I will experience a half second pause in game play (which results in really choppy gameplay) in the two games that I have installed on my computer, Guild Wars and WoW. It doesn't seem to have anything to do with my internet connection because it occurs during the login screen. I've tried lowering the visual settings, defragmenting, intalling the latest video drivers, reinstalling WoW, running -opengl in the target frame, and shutting down any troublesome background programs to try maximize cpu space. None of these have helped. I'm running an AMD 64 3500+ with an ATI 9550 and 1gig of ram. Like I said, this hasn't ever been a problem up until this past week. I don't know if this question is a bit offtopic but I don't know what else to do. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated. :)

Welcome to the forums. Have you checked the fan on the VC? I've got a 9500pro that it died on, it may be overheating.

AV programs with active scanning can slow down games, since it scans each file accessed (should be able to set an exception in the av program).
