CHOPPY GAME PLAY WITH X2 4400

Set-up in sig...

Was using DVD-shrink to burn a dvd.. and playing farcry simultaneously. Set affinity for both programs to different cpu..

still get choppy play....

it would play for a bout 30sec then freeze up for about 5 seconds.... repeat.

Any ideas??
 
Do a search here on the forum, this seems to be an issue with many people. My buddy has an x2 and he has horrible frame rates with his. Tried installing the x2 driver's and setting affinity , with no improvement.

he may need to do an entire format and reintsall...some have had to do this....Some have had this issue cured by just the above using those exact 2 programs and others have never had the issue...
Is he running winxp, winxp pro, or win2k??? that make a differnece on some things....
 
One more possibility. Hard drive contention ???? Put the DVD shring and the game on different drives. probably system on the dvdshrink drives.

Good point...If you are writing on the root driver and gaming at the same time it may be the issue...a multiple drive system is suggested with multitasking as much as multi cores....

I think it is the hard drive issue... I only have 1 raid 0 array.. not extra drives, so I'm sure this is the cause....

He's running xp pro. He's reformatted several times. Seems weird that some people have it and some don't.

I wish he could find a cure. I'll be ready in a couple of months to build a new system and I was going to build an x2. I have a 3000+ venice core that has ran great for over a month.

Could it be differences in motherboards? He has a Gigabyte Nforce4 ultra-d.

Very well may be...Some one brought up an interesting fact the other day that this ULI and VIA chips seem to void of complaints...It could be an nvidia chipset issue...I run NF3U and I hadn't seen the issue even before I installed the X2 driver....If that is the case then hopefully a chipset driver from Nvidia can clear it up for many....

I also did not do a fresh reformat or install of windows, and I am running home with SP2....

It is strange no doubt...I think it is clear it cannot be a hardware issue....

Interesting.

He has fought this problem for several weeks now. I suggested he go to Fry's and buy a Via based motherboard after I read your last post. If that didn't work he could always take it back.
 
I haven't had this problem for a couple weeks....

Before I had an issue with games playing extra fast... that was easily fixed by setting affinity.

This is a different issue and after playing around tonight I have determined it's the HDD bottleneck....

Anywho....
 
I had a similar problem that would cause me to reformat and reinstall Windows three times and every time I booted the fresh install for the first time the problem would return. I kept on believeing that my hardware was going bad, but I found out that it was not. My problem lyed in a corrupt partition, so no matter how many times I would delete or reformat it would come back. Because I have Three Hard Drives and Four Partitions: My C drive I kept deleting the partition and reinstalling and after the third time I found out the problem was on my secondary 5400 rpm drive that I use to store my downloads. Luckliy for me that was the drive with the two partitions, one 39GB and the other was a 1GB partition I used for swapfile. It was the smaller one that was corrupt and was causing Windows explorer to come to a crawl. To remidy the problem I used Windows disk managment to remove the logical drive then repartition and reformat. After my reboot all was better.

Second problem it could be is AMD's Cool and Quiet. I would recomend removing all Cool and Quiet drivers, next I would shut the PC down and Disable Cool and Quiet in the bios.

Third if those fail I will recomend a last resort: Go back to an older Bios Version, the one that predates the Dual Core support. What should happen is the Bios will only reconise just one of the two cores. There have been reports of some games not playing well with Dual Core processors this might help fix the problem untill a Patch from Microsoft or your Motherboard/Game maker can offer you a fix.

Fourth if you can borrow a friends single core CPU I would recomend trying that before you try the BIOS trick.
 
Hmmm... thanks for the information... though we seem to be a little off topic from what I originally posted.

Windows xp pro runs fine for me. All programs and games, if run by themselves run fine.

Most small apps and programs run fine simultaneously for me.

I had a problem running dvdshrink and farcry at the same time BECAUSE: DVD shrink was writing to the HDD as farcry was reading off of it..... The HDD bottleneck was the issue.... and the solution is to eventually buy another HDD.

Anyhow. Thanks again for all your guys input. Even if it is a little off topic, it's still very useful.
