So my wife has had a Compaq Presario V610US laptop for some time now. Athlon dual core, 2 gb ram, vista home premium... okay specs (one of those $399 specials). I used to watch Lost on ABC.com a season or two ago on that laptop with no issues, full screen HD, as far away from the router as I could possibly be. Now it seems when I try to watch an episode it is very jerky (both IE and Firefox). I also notice when I play flash games, they run like crap. Incidentally my kids have a laptop similar specs, same OS, that does the same thing. Netflix streaming is fine.. and I am not sure what they use. CBS.com does the same stutter. Another curious thing is the audio does not stutter... just the video.
After fiddling with wireless settings on the router I finally ruled out the wireless. I even installed some software to turn off some wireless service that would poll the router. I can bring in a laptop running XP and it is smooth as silk. I can also plug the troubled laptops in directly and same stuttering. I keep both laptops updated. I have installed/reinstalled video drivers (only available from Compaq.. Go6150) and flash. Even tried older versions of flash. No change.
Short of re-imaging and reinstalling all the apps... anyone ever experience this? My guess is it is something with Vista and an update it has received in the last 6-8 months. I am not going to spend the time researching each update/uninstalling/testing.
Maybe I will just break down and by the Win7 family pack.
