Choppy, distorted sound

i have a AMD Athlon 1900+ on a K7S5A mobo. it came with an integrated SiS soundcard which produced garbled audio while playing DVDs and certain games. i therefor threw in a Sound Blaster 512 but to no avail and it only wasted my money. oddly enough, wheni play mp3's, cd's, mpegs's, or American McGee's Alice, the sound is crystal clear, with either card. i'm running directx 8.1 which i am told may have hardware conflicts with the Voodoo3 3000 card i'm unfortunately using which therein may be creating this dilemma. does anybody have any ideas what the problem may be? does anyone know how to downgrade directx and/or uninstall directx?(i've been informed it is quite an ordeal) please help me. i never realized how important sound is until it sucks.
