Chopiness In Games

I originally posted this in the video section thinking I was having a video card issue but I was asked to move it here as it may be software related so here goes. I recently upgraded my G4 Ti4400 to a FX 5600 Ultra. I have stuck with nvidia products because I am a heavy Everquest player and from what I have read, EQ runs better with nvidia. With my original vid card, I experienced a good deal of "video lag" meaning choppiness and what not. I would have to keep pretty much all the settings off so I could moverather freely. Thinking that the FX 5600 Ultra would improve things, I bought it and installed it and I see no improvement in the game. I also experience occasional choppiness with NWN and other games. So what would be causing this? Here is a breakdown of my system:

P4 2.0 ghz
ASUS P4S533 motherboard
1.0 GB (2 x 512) Crucial PC 2700 DIMMs
PNY FX 5600 Ultra video card
SB Audigy Gamer
Windows XP Home Edition
nvidia detonator 44.03 drivers
DirectX 9.0

Not sure if you guys need any other info. I made sure no old video drivers are installed. There are no IRQ conflicts or anything else that I can see. Is there something I am missing or anything else I could check? Thanks for the help.

Try a different video card? My problem wasn't choppiness, but games would keep crashing after playing for 15-20 mins, esp on graphic intensive ones. I had a Audigy MP3, and swapped it out for a Turtle Beach card. Haven't had a problem since.

That's really odd. 🙁

With that kind of a system, you shouldn't be having any "choppiness" in games. Especially not EQ, as its several years old now and doesn't push that system to the max.

Based on what you have said, the studdering could be due to something other than the video card or CPU. While I haven't used an Audigy sound card, I agree with edmicman's comments. You might consider removing the Audigy from you system, uninstalling the drivers, and see how the games do w/o any sound.

My 1st guess would be chipset/ide drivers. Try reapplying them and see if that helps. Also, check your AGP Arp in the bios, it should be set to atleast 64 or 128 and also running at atleast AGP 2x.

Good Luck,
CH2

Tried everything mentioned so far and still I experience some choppiness. All my AGP/IDE drivers are all current. Any other suggestions?

Thanks for the link. I downloaded the file and installed it. Looks cool but a little unsure on how to use it. My vid card's latency default is set to 248. From reading the thread lower seems to be better. Should I drop it as far as I can?

The guy who made the page didn't seem too sure as to how it should be set. Perhaps try his settings(for various devices) and then try different settings from that point, checking in between settings for improvement. If you are lazy like me, I'd just go as far as solving the issue, if the issue can be solved this way.

Sounds a little like a problem I've been having with TESIII: Morrowind... frame rates are in the 60-80 range, but it's choppy when I move the mouse... it's a USB mouse... I wonder if the PCI latency thing would help with my problem?

My friend has a similar system, AMD XP 2000+ and a Geforce 4 Ti4400, and EQ still runs horribly depending on what part you're running in, especially places like the bazaar. Turning off all the new models helps a TON.

As for NWN, i'm not really sure. That game should run silky smooth on your system.

this probably has nothing to do with it, but i've noticed that after i run zone alarm for long periods of time it begins taking up lots of resources and causes choppiness in games.
