Choosing the right SSD

Hello everyone,

I really have no idea which SSD I should choose between these:

- Samsung 840 pro 256 GB : 180 £ (275 $)

- Corsair GTX neutron 240 GB : 175 £ (265 $)

- Crucial M500 240 GB : 130 £ (200 $)

My use would be to install Windows 7 on the SSD , and several important programs and games!

Thanks for the help!

If you're just choosing from those, I'd take the Samsung. Performance differences will be small, but the Samsung has a 5 year warranty, that's never a bad thing. Unless someone's offering a 6 year warranty anyway...

Desktop or notebook? A Samsung 840 will get better battery life, though the non-Pro would be a cheaper alternative, should that be a significant concern. For a desktop, the Crucial is the cheapest, and all of them will have about equal performance for your use.

You won't see but a few minutes gained from a SSD in a laptop...
Depends on the laptop, and how many minutes would make it important. It can be quite a bit for an already low-power one, such a netbook-class machine, sometimes 20-40 minutes. But, only with an SSD that idles pretty low, which the Corsair and Crucial do not.

I got the Sumsung 840 (Non-Pro) and I'm really happy with it ..

My opinion is kinda biased as I got Samsung TVs, Monitors, Phones, Tablets and even Vaccum Cleaner !!

If I where you I would go with the Samsung due to a few things.

Samsung is a great product. Also it will last longer and it comes with 5 yr warranty which is overall a wonderful feature..

There's no way to know whether it will last longer or not. Technology moves too fast, and predicting such things based on the last generation is a recipe for disappointment. Just because the 830s lasted well, doesn't mean the 840s will, and especially doesn't mean your 840 will. Make backups of any important data, and don't purchase a storage device that is too expensive to replace.

There have been scattered reports of bricked 840 drives, FI, with no known reason for it. That doesn't mean you shouldn't buy one, because there are many failure modes, and shit happens. Some drives from every maker get unpredictably bricked. But while it may be worth going with a solid brand, like Samsung or Crucial, as opposed to random SF rebrander with unknown flash quality, so as to hedge your bets, expecting longer service life based just on that, is a step down the slippery slope towards preventable losing important data. Assume at least one of your storage devices will prematurely fail, plan for that eventuality, then be happy when it doesn't happen 🙂.

The Samsung 840 Pro, however, does have a better warranty, of the options in the OP.

If price is not a concern, get the Pro. If you want to save some money, get the Crucial. Performance between these drives aren't that different.

I've had a Samsung 830 on a mac mini for a year and an 840 non-pro for a couple of months and both have been rock solid.
