Choosing the right equiment: Switch?

Right now I have the cable modem connected to a wireless-N router to get internet to all my computers, PS3 and a blu-ray player that can stream netflix.

My house is pre-wired for Cat5e with all of the wires going to the basement. I am thinking about finishing the loose ends with keystone jacks and buying a switch so I then can have a wired connection to the PS3, the Blu-ray player and the basement when we get it finished next year.

For this area is a switch the right equipment I need to feed the internet from the router to the rest of the house?

What about : Managed, Unmanaged, Smart Network Management Types.

And what about Jumbo Frames?

Any recommendations for a switch?

For that application, a cheap unmanaged switch with jumbo frames is probably all you need.

It goes on sale once in a while down to about 25. You can also get the 5 port version but doesn't really leave as much room for expansion if you have more devices later.

You dont need Jumbo frames, everyone thinks they do, but only a few actually do. Unless you are planning some iscsi traffic or the like its just a waste.

Most likely an unmanaged switch is going to do everything you want it to do, the only thing management offers is things like vlan assignments and the ability to configure ports to certain speeds etc, which frankly most users dont need.

^ Agree. Jumbo frames slow down home environments because most home gear (IE the PS3) can't do it and causes MTU and frame issues. All devices on a segment must be the same MTU or performance will suffer.
