Choosing my Colleges

So far, i've been accepted to U. Mich, Penn State, and Rutgers.

UMich is $45k a year, Penn State $32k, and Rutgers I get Honors College with $2,500 renewable scholarship, so that comes to around $18k a year

For NYU, if I do get in, I'd have to stay with my grandparents in Brooklyn to save on the Housing, saves about $11,000

I'm going to major in Finance.

Any thoughts or inputs as to which one is good/better? Maybe have greater opportunities?

Penn State is a zoo, you don't want to go there. I would say Rutgers looks like a solid choice, especially with the scholarship.

Penn State may be a zoo, if you consider a party school a zoo. But to suggest that Rutgers is any better is laughable.

What do you want to do with your finance degree? If you're aiming for investment banking, go to Michigan or NYU without a doubt. In other areas, it's not as important...

I said it's a zoo because there are so many people up there that it's ridiculous. It's all a matter of personal preference, but I would much rather go to a school where I can remember the names of the people in my classes. Also, I never said that Rutgers was any better, I only suggested it because he got a scholarship and it would save a lot of money for whoever is footing the bill.



 
NYU if you get accepted to Stern. Penn is slighty better for business than Rutgers, but not $14k better. The thing you have to remember is that at Rutgers you have to compete for a spot in the B school during your 2nd year, if you don;t get in you'll have to major in Econ or transfer to Newark (assuming you're going to the NB campus) .

U Mich is borderline worth $45 a year, but not really if you get into Stern.

I went to Rutgers, couldn't afford to go anywhere else anyway.

Or BU. If youre going into finance I'd go to either Boston or NYC - the 2 biggest financial cities in the country.

I hear BU is great for investment management.

HELL YEAH!!, i am sadly graduating from umich this year and i mean i just dont wanna leave, its f'in great here, if you wanna talk more abt why you should come here shoot me a pm and DEF check out Campus Day, i think that if you see the campus you'll def love it

btw: im also a finance major, graduating from our #1 nationally ranked business program, which again is umbeliavable, brand new $144million dollar facility going up right now, im gonna be working at a top 3 investment bank next year in nyc and most of the undergrad (and grad) graduates from out business program go on to great things

Penn State FTW!

Seriously... i dont know anyone who has regretted coming here. In fact, I know many people who didnt want to leave, so they just stuck around for grad school. (and then started working for the university, like myself 😉 )
 
As much as you may hate it, get your general education requirements out of the way at a CC that will transfer to these universities and then transfer Spr Soph year or Fall Jr year. Work hard, get the 4.0GPA with volunteer work and other experience, and you'll be able to transfer into those schools anyway.

If I could do it again, this is exactly what I'd do.

BU isn't any more reputable than Penn State or Rutgers.

It's not about location at all. If you want a non investment banking job, you can get it from any of the schools in this thread. If you're worthy, they will come to you, or pay for you to come to them. I repeat, location is unimportant as far as job opportunities.

But, if you want to be an investment banker working your life away and bringing in insane amounts of cash, you basically have to attend an outstanding school. Michigan and NYU would be the best choices by far.
 
Depends on what you want to major in.

I've worked on Wall Street for 15 years and of those schools see a lot of NYU kids. I went to BU and see quite a number too along with UofM grads. I don't see many Penn State grads and just a few Rutgers.

BU is also more expensive than NYU. Got into BU last year and they wanted about $50k including room and board. NYU was about $40-$45 including room and board. Didn't go to either though, since I wanted to major in sciences (going to the U of Chicago instead).

IMO, NYU would probably be the best for your intended major.
 
Just remember that if you plan on getting a graduate degree, then your undergraduate institution doesn't really matter that much; it's what you do there that counts.

Go State!

I love it here, hoping to get into PSU's Med School. PSU is a great time, however, it is in a small town that loves to rake money out of the school and the students. I hate State College PA but I love PSU. The cops are dicks and have huge egos, living expenses are out of control, there is no parking, and its cold (and maybe raining) all the time. Imagine how great the school is that even with all that against it, people still love it.

Yep, I financed my undergrad living at home with about the same money that I spent at 1.5years for a Masters at Mich (living away from home). It's a pretty expensive school.
