heh... i love the bottom...

i can hear the guy above me almost daily stomping around... but its not big deal i have gotten use to it...

plus its the only way i can hit reference level with my svs subwoofer... this thing gets cranked and so far no complaints (been living @ my complex for 5 months)... all i know the guy above me, hates me... bwahahaha...

Another pro for top floor. No worries of first floor window break-ins, in most cases anyway.

As far as noise is concerned, you're going to hear a lot less "general noise" (people walking, beds creaking, showers running) if you are on the top because the only noise that will really travel is YOURS.

As far as loud noise (stereos, etc.) then it's a matter of the person living above/below you not how much noise travels. If a person turns the radio up, then you're going to hear it no matter what floor you are on.

If there is currently someone in the apartment above/below the ones you are looking at, just go talk to them, tell them you are considering the apartment above/below them and ask them what they think of the complex so it sounds less like you are trying to figure out if they suck or not.

I was looking at apartments, and there are rooms that are currently available. One is on the 2nd floor (highest) and one is on the 1st floor. In terms of wanting to reducing as much noise as possible, would it be better to live on the 1st floor or the 2nd? I was thinking if I were on the 2nd floor, I wouldn't have to hear footsteps or things above me. However say if I were to sleep on the 1st floor, I can't hear anything below me because there is none...what do you guys think? Oh yeah, I'll be living in an area where it is only one bed-bath complexes (Singles, I'm living by myself, and the people around me are also or max of 2 people); so I guess that should reduce a little bit even more noise, eh?

totally depends on construction....

If construction is good, then both floor will be sound resistant.

If construction is bad, then both floors will conduct sound.

depends on your lifestlye. are you going to have people over late at night, parties, jump around in your undies like rob in risky business? if you think youll be making noise, then you may want to take the bottom one to avoid any complaints against you for noise.

if youre going to live a quiet, peaceful life, then take the top.

I was on the third floor of a three floor building. I was happy there for almost six years, if that tells you anything. I hardly ever heard a thing from anyone. The only time all the steps were a real bother was when moving in and out. (And if I was doing a lot of laundry, since the laundry room was in the basement--that's four levels total.)

Top floor...neighbors underneath us are always complaining about us making noise, plus we let the toilet overflow and water got into his apartment. Top is always better.

I live on the 2nd floor in a 3 floor building. We stomp if they are blasting their stupid sub at crazy hours and the people above me make some very strange noises all the time.

i live bottom but this fat fvck above me has feet made out of concrete and he loves to walk around all the time.oh yeah that guy is a nutcase too, i can hear him yelling to himself in the bathroom

and the freaking high cost of living in california i can't afford a townhouse any time soon 🙁

Lol... I totally know how you feel. Right now I'm living in a dorm and all I hear are people banging each other while banging their doors while banging the subs.

I had an apartment where the lady above me would shower at 5:00 a.m. every morning. She had to be using the shower in unatural ways because the noise disturbed me so. Luckily my son is a well to do lawyer so I had him sue her.

Wow.. did she do it purposely?

Top floor is best, but on the other hand, cooling costs are more since heat rises.

and moving in is a bitch if you are moving your own stuff, im in the middle and the person that lives above me is an elephant

top is good.. most people who are stomping/having sex/playing loud bass music (three irritating things people do late at night without regard to their surroundings) resonate through their floor and not their ceiling
