Choosing a tv...

LCD projection vs. Plasma HD are two very different animals. Tell us your wants and uses for the TV and we can help you better. Thats a lousy price on the Panasonic - you could get a 50" Panasonic HD Plasma for $5k.

These are monitors only and don't have the speakers attached. Sorry to promote visualapex, I don't work for them. They're well respected on AVS for customer service and are not the lowest price out there.

I want to use the tv for watching tv, movies and playing halo.

My wall is about 9 feet from my sofa.

I dont have seperate speakers but Im considering purchasing some.

If xbox, dvds, and Standard definition TV are your needs get the 42in EDTV. 480 lines of resolution are enough for your needs and you sit far enough back not to notice the screen door effect.

If a HD programming subscription, HTPC, WMVHD, Xbox2 are your wants or are in your future (and you know what these stand for) then go for High Def TV's. Don't be like my parents and get a 52 in JVC HDTV LCOS rear projection, then complain about how lousy regular cable looks on it. I also advised them to go for the Panny 42 EDTV or another 480p plasma. NEC also makes a strong 480p plasma, so is the newest Zenith.

"Oh but it's digital cable, it should look better than this, right?"
No.

If you want to play games I recommend LCD since plasma has burn-in problems (of has this been some what resolved?).

Plasma Burn in is not as big a problem as commonly perceived. Turn down the brightness from "torch mode". Manufacturers max out the brightness to make their unit look the "brightest" when on the showroom floor. The logic being that to the uninformed consumer, the brightest TV is the best - it worked on my parents, even though I was there with them when they bought their TV.

Or just wait it out till after summer when LCD prices should begin tumbling.

do projection TV's suffer from this as much as Plasma or LCD? I found a RCA 52" projection HDTV at Best Buy for $1100, and it seems like a decent deal, though i'd rather get a 42".

I'm going to be gaming also, so would this work?

I would never recommend anyone at this time to buy an edtv... nothing like buying into a dead end. especially at that price range... honestly, i would get something around the 50 inch range and if you must hang it on the wall, get a dlp.

I'd go for the Panasonice out of those two. I prefer the look of plasma screens to RPTV.

Between those, I'd take the Panny. However, it's definitely not the best Panny for the money. That specific one is 1 generation behind the current models.
