hello i have a really bad cough and I need in you opinion what is the best medicine to use that will help me overnight the quickest. tomorrow i am doing something important and i need to have the least amount of coughing. thank you

up until recently I usually recommended Delsym because I've used it and it "seemed" to work for me to let me sleep all night. There have been a few articles recently that claim that the active ingredient in Delsym or Robitussin DM (dextromethorphan) has mostly a placebo effect. What is now recommended is to first use an older generation antihistamine. I like chlorpheniramine because it doesn't cause as much drowsiness as diphenhydramine (aka Benedryl). The only problem with chlorpheniramine is that it only lasts ~4 hours. There isn't a problem combining the 2 together so I think it may be wise to use both.

You need a real cough suppressant that has codeine in it. I can't remember if you can buy it over the counter, so you may have to get a prescription for it.

its legal in my state to buy a 4 oz container of codeine cough syrup as an over-the-counter medicine but nobody that I know of sells it without a prescription

Codeine is often used as a recreational drug. This is mainly due to its easy availability over the counter or on prescription in combination products (which, in certain countries, are scheduled lower than codeine as a single-agent)

from wiki. but anyone know a name of a medicine with that stuff in it

I don't think you can get OTC codeine in the US (in Canada you can as 2-2-2/T1s). If you have some T3s around, you can take those. And i never heard that dextromethorphan is thought to be a placebo... it works damn fine for me. I take the Robitussin gel caps that contains only dextromethorphan, and it worked fantastic for me.

Black tea with lemon and honey. Drink a glass at least once every two hours while awake.

The tea provides various anti-microbial qualities.
The lemon has vitamin C and the honey will sooth your throat.

Benadryl like he said and then a decent anti-histamine.....take for OTC claritin...find the off-label brand....it shouldnt make you that drowsy. If you are having lots of congestion pseudoephedrine will help the cough and dry you up, especially if mixed with a good anti-histamine..
