choosing a Battlefield game

I really like the Battlefield series on PC and now that I'm getting
the hang of 360 console FPS controlls I want to grab a copy while
waiting till Oct for the BF3. Which of them had a decent offline (I
will probably play local co-op with my son) and maybe even still has
a decent online community.

Bad Company 2 is great, I don't know about the 360 version but on PC the online community is very active. I imagine it's pretty active on the 360 as well. And it's cheap.

I've already got Bad Company 2 on the PC and prefer not to get it again for the 360, unless all the other BF games are really that bad.

Bad Company 2 and MAYBE 1943 are probably the only two that have any sort of online communitry remaining. I play BC2 on Live a fair bit, and its very active still, such a fun game.
I'd honestly only think about BC2 at this point, not entirely sure about what local co-op is like though. My wife sucks at those games, so I don't even ask her.

Your only other options are BF2, Bad Company 1, and BF1943.

BF2 is pretty old, not sure how populated the servers are, and no true single player mode (just the same as MP with bots). Bad Company 1 probably has very little online presence with BC2 out, but it does have an okay single player mode. 1943 has no single player, it's MP-only. Somewhat newer so it should still have people playing online but that's all you'll get.

Basically if you want a decent single player AND decent multiplayer, get Bad Company 2. It's the newest of the Battlefield games as well, so it should have the most in common with BF3 when it comes out.

Oh, and NONE of the Battlefield games has any form of split screen. If you want a split screen shooter, get a Halo game.

Or Call of Doody.

With some limitations.

No split screen while playing online except in Black Ops (2 players).

Black Ops and World at War also have zombie mode which is pretty awesome. MW2 doesn't have zombies, but it does have Spec Ops (somewhat similar to co-op campaign).

For local co-op, though, I think one of the recent COD games would be better than Halo. Halo has the best split screen online (up to 4 players per console!). But zombies and spec ops are great fun for local co-op.

BF2 was on the 360?

Halo has firefight.
