Higher refresh rate is better. For some people, they can't stand a refresh lower than 85hz so look for 85hz at 1280x1024 as that is what most people run 19"'ers at.

Try a search and/or post in Video forum. A search should bring up a lot since there has been a lot of 19" monitor threads.

Most of them are KDS, Viewsonic, Sony (if you have the $$$), or Samsung.

I'd go with the Samsung 900NF. I have the 700NF and it's great, just wish I had the money to buy the 900NF. It's just as good as any Sony but it might put you a tad over your spending limit.

Spre, for future reference, inches are denoted by double quotes ("), feet are singles ('). 19' monitors exist only in the wet dreams of other Anandtechers.

Consider what the primary uses of your machine will be (games vs spreadsheets vs layouts, ect). Hit the local 'puter stores and compare each model; and do it at several stores. I looked at a Viewsonice PF790 at Best Buy and it was the pits, looked at the same model in CompUsa and it was decent.

Also think of how exacting you are in viewing; some models give you extensive control over color, divergence, rotation, ect..

I ended up buying the KDS AV 19" (and love it), but the Mag 810 was a close runner-up and both are in your price range.

good luck

I've had good luck with the upper end Hitachi's. They just renumbered but I think they would come ine the top part of your budget. Don't skimp!

I second Lalakai's recommendation for the KDS AV195TF. I have the older model (AV195T) and love it!!! It has a Trinitron tube and is as sharp as any other monitor I've seen. I run it at 1152 x 864 @ 85Hz. You should be able to find them in the $350 range.
