Choose me an upgrade path :P

I have an Athlon XP 1800+ w/ 512 RAM and a Gigabyte KT333 mobo.

Should I:

1.) Switch to P4 and get an 800Mhz HT 2.4C + new mobo etc etc
or
2.) Just get an Athlon 2600+ + extra RAM to tide me over until the next big thing

I run lots of apps at once (Dweaver, Photoshop, Trillian, Quintessential) and the hyperthreading sounds like it could benefit me. On the other hand, new Athlon + new RAM = 200. New P4 + mobo + heatsink + RAM = a lot more :|

Your system seems ok, and with Prescott and Athlon 64 right around the corner now might not be the best time to do a full system overhaul...

I say Grab a Barton 2500+ overclock to 2.2ghz and grab another 512 ram.

That will hold you over till the new platforms work the kinks out and come down in price.

I second that notion.

Get the 2500+ or 2600+, and wait for Prescott or the second generation Athlon64.

Get a 2500+, not a 2600+ if you are going to another CPU. What stepping is your 1800+ though. The latest 1800+'s have been turning out some 2.4-2.5ghz oc'ers.
