Choose just one DS and PSP game

I like about anything but want to avoid RPGs on this trip. I almost picked up Hot Shots golf for the PSP earlier today but have some questions regarding my PSP and its 1.5FW. Afraid of a potential update to the firmware. Do I even need to worry about that anymore?

DS games I looked at were the new Advanced Wars and Phoenix Wright. I'm really open to anything but like I said I want to avoid full blown FF type RPGS.

So basically, help me decide. If you could have only one game for either system let me know what it would be. I don't care how old it is either.

You want to avoid full blown RPGs, but about strange RPGs, like Shiren the Wanderer? It's more of a roguelike (diablo), random dungeon generation, etc. If not something like that, I'd suggest Castlevania. With only 1 game, I'm suggesting stuff with a lot of content.

BTW, you should really try Mario & Luigi: Partners In Time. This game's part RPG, but it doesn't feel like it at all. Very very fun.

I'm not avoiding RPGs because of a dislike of them. I only use the handheld on road trips/flights and the thought of trying to play something that requires thought on the road trip coming up is not something I look forward to.

Advance Wars, Advance Wars, for the love of god, Advance Wars. Yes, you have to think a bit, but it will SUCK YOU IN. There have been times when I've started a level in the bathroom and an hour later I'm still sitting on the toilet because I don't want to stop playing long enough to leave the bathroom.

The only problem is that if you get to a level that you can't figure out, you're stuck. Most of the levels you can grind out and eventually win if you don't completely screw up the beginning, but you might want to print out a guide from GameFAQs just if case you really get stuck.

If you don't want deep games that need a time and thought investment then you sure are way off looking at Advance Wars and Phoenix Wright, both are excellent games but both require you to immerse yourself and think quite a bit (PW more so since you need to be focused reading endless streams of text and picking up the hints within).

Ninja Gaiden DS is pretty incredible, I would suggest that but keep in mind it's only about 5-8 hours long so if it's a long trip you might end up finishing the game before it's over though it does feature some extras and a new difficulty level and the game is awesome to replay so yeah, you might be good with that. Mario Kart DS is also pretty engaging.

Firmware 1.5 is old & busted, M33 custom firmware is the new hotness. If you upgrade to 3.90M33 (not official 3.90) you'll be able to do all the homebrew stuff AND play the latest games. You'll also be able to play PSX games. 😀

As for Hot Shots Golf, that was one of the first games for the PSP (IIRC) so it'd probably work under firmware 1.5.

What he said, its what Im using. Its very easy to do, takes all of five minutes once you have a pandora battery. I didnt want to mod mine, so I looked on craigslist, and found a guy 15 mins from me, and charged me $18 to do it. Ive got a NES, SNES, GBA, and Genesis emulator with every game I could want on mine, all working great. Tons of games for long trips.

From what I understand, since I am already at 1.5, I don't even need a pandora battery. I can just upgrade to 3.xxM33 (can't remember if it's 3.8) and then from there to 3.90M33. It was just throwing me for a loop because I haven't screwed with the system since devhook 2.71 or so and back then you were basically dumb if you ever flashed a 1.5 to anything else.

If I can get this updated before the trip I'll probably just buy God of War. Never played any of them and it looks interesting. For the DS I've narrowed it down to Advanced War, Ninja Gaiden, and Castlevania. Mario Kart looks sweet but one of the guys is bringing his kids DS and they already have MK.

Disgaea PSP would keep you busy for a loooooong time, unless that falls into your RPG category. It's a strategy RPG like FFTactics.

You have to go 3.5 to 3.8 to 3.9 or something like that. I upgraded mine about a month ago... time consuming but fairly painless.

Personally, I recommend Lumines. I can play that game for hours without stopping.

Yeah, you have to go to 3.52M33, apply update 4, then from 3.52M33-4 install 3.90M33 and apply whatever update is the latest for that.

What you said is correct. I would look into getting a second battery. Gamestop and Game Crazy sell used ones for $15. Pretty good deal.

GoW is great. There is actually a demo if you want to try it out first. Castlevania: Dracula X Chronicles on the PSP is fantastic also. If you beat it, you get to unlock original Rondo of Blood and Symphony of the Night. Which is imo the best of the series ever. MK on the DS is sweet, my daughter has is, and we both play it. However, if you get an emulator.. you can have the NES, SNES, GBA, and even the N64 version of Mario Kart... 😉 But since your pal has it, its not an issue I guess.

Got the PSP updated to 3.9. Fairly painless though the 'easy install guides' tend to overlook things that a complete noob wouldn't know. Google is my friend and somehow led me to a youtube walk through. Simple enough.

God of War time. 🙂

Also, for any of you with the upgraded FW, do you see any reason to avoid upping the clock speed on the PSP?
