Cholestetatoma - do I have one?

When I was a kid, I had constant ear infections for something like six months straight.

Today, I have almost constant problems with pressure in my right ear - it feels like something weird is stuck behind my ear. I also have large amounts of brown, cruddy earwax that are very annoying. And for a good chunk of the year, my ears refuse to re-pressurize, resulting in very unpleasant and nasty pain.

My hearing is not quite as good as it once was; the fact that I never listen to loud music, attend loud concerts, or have any possible causes for ear damage outside of occasional use of a bandsaw is a bit worrying.

None of my doctors have ever mentioned it - I found out about them only because I found out that one of my favorite webcomic artists (Jeph Jaques of of Questionable Content) had surgery to remove one while reading through the comic archives.

Am I being paranoid, or might this be a problem?

I had something similar in college. It turned out to be a really bad ear infection. They put some weird solution in my ear and in about five minutes, out fell a TON (and I mean a disgustingly large amount, like at least a year's worth at a normal rate of production) of earwax. They then did some wierd rinse. They then gave me some antibiotic eardrops and some lubricating solution to temporarily prevent earwax buildup. They also gave me antibiotic pills. It cleared up in a day or two.

Oops, forgot they gave me strong vicodin for the pain. Hooray opiates !

I'm aware of that - I intend on asking my doctor when I next go in, in about a month, for a checkup. I just wanted to know if I'm totally off the mark.

My ears are largely earwax-free, which is why I'm wondering if this might be the culprit.

Go see a doctor. They can be deadly if left untreated.

I got my ear looked at - it does'nt appear that anything's wrong, according to the school nurse. (I was there as a result of a nasty stomach virus, and figured they should take a look.)

Well, if you want to take the word of the school nurse that's cool. Did she explain the crazy wax, pain, and pressure as 'just normal'? BTW, cholesteatoma's form on the inside of the ear, behind the ear drum, and the only way to truly test for one is hearing test comparisons and/or CT scans.
