Cholesterol question

Say you're inactive and have level of 199.

You go through 30 days of diet = 90% salad/fruits and 10% chicken

30 days of 20 min

30 days of weight training

How much (on avg) can you reduce your cholesterol ? Is this something you can drop easily or not really ?

Not for me, for my dad

His levels are around 220, also tested positive for diabetic, high blood pressure.

They already started him on some medication but I dont think its good to go on too much.

We already stop him from eating sweets and almost everything else... man refuses to see doctor till it was too late...

Multiple risk factors for heart disease (high bp, diabetes, high chol, male) just in that post. Any major changes in diet or exercise level need to be discussed with his doctor first. You can go too far too fast and harm yourself if you are not careful.

Does eating oatmeal and taking omega 3 pills on a daily basis really lower cholesterol?

Oatmeal has been proved to lower LDL cholesterol. My doctor says the jury is still out on the omega 3 fatty acid pills and cholesterol. I still do both, along with a glass of red wine daily.

I havn't had mine checked in a couple years.. it was at least 260 then.. and I havn't changed my diet much so I imagine its the same.

Had mine checked about a month ago (total was 240 - my HDL was okay at 40 but my LDL was high at 180 - should be around 140)...

been eating oatmeal for breakfast about 5 days a week (with about 2 teaspoons of brown sugar in it), taking the omega pills 3 times a day and have been doing weights 3 days a week and cardio 5 days a week (about 30-40 minutes on a stationary bike - my heart rate average is around 155 BPM)...

i have probably eaten more tuna, salmon and skinless chicken this month than I have my entire life...also haven't had a burger/fries or a coke in the past month...

my doctor wants to see if I can lower my cholesterol level without the use of medication...

will get checked again in 2 weeks...

Substitute 5% fish/5% chicken in for that 10% chicken- fresh fish has lots of cholesterol-fighting goodies, including the popular omega-3 FAs. Avoid canned/processed fish though, likewise farmed fish. If at all possible, go with fish that was actually caught, on a boat.

Increase dietery fibre & take a niacin supplement (get a no flush version) to help reduce cholesterol

Aquaman

consult a doctor. try flaxseed oil.

I ran about 20 miles a week, played organized sports, and lifted and could only bring my total cholesterol to about 195 even though I had very low body-fat.

Everyone on my father's side has high levels so I take the lowest dose on vytorin and now it is in the low 100's without any exercise/diet extremes.
