Went to see doctor for a coughing. My usual doc isnt available. Went to see one of his partners.

He's like in his 60's. He does an exam, and writes a scipt for anti-biotics.

then mentions that he noticed the annual blood tests in my charts and the cholesterol is high.

2007: cholesterol = 240
2008: cholesterol = 195
2009: cholesterol = 220

He says in all 3 yrs, my LDL has been high and that i'm at high risk for heart disease. (huh? I'm not even 40 yet. He's thinking loooooong term???)

Normal is cholesterol < 200.
10 yrs ago, normal was cholesterol < 250.

My normal doc never said anything.

I turned down a script for cholesterol lowering drug, but asked for a write up for blood work.

THen going to make appt for normal doc after i get results back, but only if cholesterol > 200.

edit:
HDL is good, non smoker, skinny.
Dad has high blood pressure.

It's one risk factor of several. If your LDL are excessively high and your HDL's are low that's a bad combo. But's it's one factor of several including blood pressure, weight, lifestyle choices (smoking), family history, age, ect.

But going from a sub 200 to an above 200 can triple your risk of heart disease by itself.

thx for link

edit:
Your risk score is 1 percent. That means about 1 of 100 people with this level of risk will have a heart attack or die of heart disease within the next 10 years.

hm.. that means nothing since noone my age has heart attacks (unless drug related). will still goto my regular doc if my test results have cholesterol > 200.

My Doctor is experimenting on his patients. He said that the trend for cholesterol levels is lower each year. So basically, every male patient of his over the age of 35 is on statins, whether they truely need them or not. I'm sure at some point all of his patients, including me, will have some sort of side effect like liver failure or something.
