Choices...

I have a choice to make. Either the X850 XT or the 6800 Ultra. Both are priced similar...the ATI is cheaper. Which one would you pick for GENERAL gaming. Not to say LAME gaming but for all your gaming needs. I play everything...from the latest shooters (HL2, Doom3, Battlefield (all)) to MMORPGs like EQ2 and WoW. I have seen the reports here on the differences and they seem to be rather split. What would you pick and why? I have to say in advance I lean to Nvidia cause they do much better with their drivers in my experience.

Thanks...and please keep the fanboy crap out...I am looking for legit reasons for each.

There have been many, many, many threads on this exact same topic. Do a search and you'll get some more information that way. 🙂

If the X850XT is cheaper, I'd probably pick that one, since from what I read it's basically the fastest overall. ATI's drivers are just fine these days. (And I say this as a current 6800GT owner 😛)

As far as it goes, if you want to eventually run SLI, then get the 6800. Otherwise, get the X850.

If they are the same price, I'd probally go with the X850XT. Since you said the ATI is cheaper, that makes it an even better choice.

The 6800Ultra has a few advantages (SM3.0), but I think the X850XT is just a slightly faster card in almost all applications aside from OpenGL games. From my understanding, ATI drivers have improved a bunch of the past 2 or so years. Nvidia drivers are still good too.

However, if you're planning an SLI setup sometime in the near future, I'd have to rethink my position. But as it stands, the X850XT is a better choice as a single card.

Regardless, I think you'll be happy with either. I love my 6800 Ultra.
