Most important system specs (already ordered, not quite in my hands yet):

ASUS P5E
E8400 3.0GHZ 1333FSB
2x2GB Corsair XMS DDR2 800
XFX 8800GT 512mb

What I do with my system, lately:

Gaming... will be getting crysis... will revisit HL2, orange box, etc.

It is a media / gaming center. It is hooked up to a 42" 720p plasma TV. I use it to watch media and play games. It is generally run from a bluetooth wireless keyboard/touchpad combo, the logitech dinovo. When playing games, a regular USB mouse is attached.

Favorite media player is Mplayer, specifically MPUI.

I will need the following types of software, because I'm not familiar as of the time being what's the best of what's available for Vista 64:

CD/DVD burning software. I have nero 7 premium (installed on WinXP pro 32bit), not sure if I want or need to purchase upgrade or if it will simply work.

Media center software?? Something good for organizing media files, music, videos?

VMWare --- not sure if I want or need to do this yet, but I have been thinking of creating a VM within vista for either linux or winxp 32 (in case of compatibility problems with software)

Any other that will make my life easier with Vista that I should think about?

Is there a way to interface this with my cable box to turn the computer into a Tivo? Is it worth my time to try to do so? I barely even watch TV.

My previous "method" of media center organization was quite ghetto. I had MPUI (mplayer) in the quicklaunch bar. I would just launch MPUI, open a folder with the media, drag and drop into MPUI.

MPUI has awesome keyboard controls, the logitech dinovo has a great volume slider, it actually makes for a very convenient setup. However, I'm wondering if I can't get some truly impressive software setup for my system that organizes better, has a fast interface (not like iTunes which seems slow as crap most of the time) and has **customizable** keyboard controls.

Thanks for an suggestions.

For media player software I would just ditch Vista Business and get either Home Premium or Ultimate 64 bit. If you weren't running 64 bit, BeyondTV is a winner, maybe check out Myth or Sage TV for x64 compatibility. Newer CD authoring software would add HD and BluRay functionality, but I would just use Nero 7 again unless you feel limited by it.

other versions of vista are not possible as this is a free license from my university for engineering students, and vista business 64 is the only one available.
