I am now doing a major hardware upgrade and will be giving away my 1155 mobo and 16 Gb DDR3 memory to a friend. I can give him an i7-2600K Sandy Bridge or a newer i5-3570K Ivy Bridge. Which would be the better processor given a choice between the two; the older i7 or the newer i5 or does it really not make any difference?

if i were him i'd want the 2600k.

pci-e 2 vs 3.0 has a marginal difference in performance.

not to mention cooler temps.

@stock
i5 would be slightly better for gaming
i7 would be better for multithreaded applications

Conversely, give him the 3570k, a hammer and a razor blade. And a link to IDC's epic de-lid thread.

He's getting a nice bit of kit for free, at least have him perform a little for decent temps.

Then later you can give me the 2600k and have a new lazy friend in your inner circle. ;-)

2600K is the faster chip. 3570K will draw less power and generate less heat.

Thanks.

He is a very smart guy so I will pass on all the good advice above and let him make the decision. I need to keep one of them and for my purposes either will do just fine.

Should be receiving all the new hardware for my new build by end of today (ASRock Z170 X6, 6700K, Samsung 500GB 950 Pro M.2, 16GB G.Skill DDR4-3200, and a new Corsair H60 to replace my 5+ year old H50). My existing 4 year old SSD 2600 machine, even with a very recent W7 clean install, is just not as well behaved and snappy as it once was. Still a good reliable performer but I can see some differences now so time to get modern hardware.
