Sharp Aquos E778 120hz LCD - Initial review and response coming soon (this weekend ish)

More and more people are moving towards larger HDTV displays as PRIMARY pc displays in addition to TV / Console gaming usage.

I have been through 3 HDTV's as monitors and have yet to find one that really fits the bill. I was hoping to find a guide here VERY Similar to the "The LCD Thread" but for HDTVs

Anyone have any info? My budget is roughly 1400$ USD for a new large HDTV display.

LAST DISPLAYS

Samsung 22" BW
ACER 22"
Westinghouse 32" 720p display
Sony Bravia 40" 40S4100
Samsung 40" LN40A550

I'd like to go with something MUCH "quicker" feeling than these panels (even though my last 2 had 4-6 ms response they still felt "off"

I have the Samsung LN40A550. I use it as a monitor all the time with my HTPC where i'll watch hulu and other stuff with. It is a beautiful thing and the 1080p resolution looks brilliant.

Having said that, my couch is about 8 feet away from the TV, and doing regular computing tasks/browsing the internet at 1080p makes the text very small and hard to see, so I usually downscale it to 720p for easier browsing. IMO a 40" TV is much to large to use as a primary monitor because to take advantage of the resolution you still need to sit pretty close to it.

If you want a monitor first and a TV second, don't get a TV larger than 30". If you want a TV first and a monitor second, get whatever TV you want and live with it.

How do HDTVs compare to normal LCD monitors in terms of input lag and response times? I had the impression HDTVs had slightly slower response times (since they're not fast TN panels) and maybe higher input lag since many HDTVs seem to have some postprocessing to enhance picture quality.

My Bravia had a 4 ms response time and very little input lag (but no where near how fast my 22" Samsung was)

Im trying to find the "sweet spot" where i can get low input lag , fast response time, and a BIG PANEL.

I would, but that's a lot to cover. ;) AVSForum is the premier place for HDTV research IMO.

Is a plasma out of the question? I have been using my 50" Kuro for gaming and it is fantastic.

That's because a Kuro is fantastic at anything. :) I just bought an Elite, myself. Realistically though, you have to put significant distance between yourself and the display if it's going to be used as a computer monitor. Other than HTPCs, I don't often find that feasible and I think most people would be better off getting a plasma for a TV and a decent LCD for a monitor, 30" max.

I bet you experienced high input lag rather than high response time. AFAIK high input lag will make them feel a little "off" while high response time will result in ghosting. Also, most (maybe all) LCD TVs use PVA panels, which typically have higher input lag than the TN and IPS panels that are used in a lot of computer monitors (although some computer monitos us PVA panels as well).

Also, as stated before, what's your viewing distance. You won't want to be 10 feet from a 40" computer monitor (or 2 feet from it, for that matter).

My view distance is ~4 feet at my desk when im PC gaming / browsing web / using various software, then about 8 - 10 foot for Bluray / PS3 gaming etc..
