So Boxing week flyers are out now and I see 2 lcd tvs that im interested in provided that it will fit where i want to put it. but would like some opinions

LG 32" Flat-Panel LCD HDTV - for $480 CND

Or

Sony Bravia KDL-32VL140 for $699 CND

from what I can see spec wise they are pretty much the same for inputs and the only thing that I can see is that the Sony does output 1080P vs LG 720P output

Main use would be Movies (dvds currently) planning on getting a ps3 more likely or a xbox 360

Dont want to go any bigger and even 32" might be too big as well.

I get confused between tv... have not really been following them

For DVD's I would take the LG since from most distances 720p tends to look better than 1080p with low res sources since they don't need to be scaled as much. Still Sony uses good scaling so this is going to be a complete Wash.
For PS3/Blu-Ray/Xbox 360 if you are more than 5 feet away, still the LG, if you are sitting less than 5 feet the Sony 1080p.
For Computer use the 1080p Sony in a heartbeat.
For long term peace of mind, 1080p is a good call too.

Still 220 bucks is not insignificant and both Sony and LG are quality brands to me.

It isn't 720P looks better than 1080P at any distance, it would be more the scaler than anything.
Under any circumstance, they should look identical (assuming they are the native resolutions of the sets) with an equal scaler.

For the most part I agree, its all on the scalar. But the issue is it is more work on a scalar to interpolate the extra pixels going from 480p to 1080p than from 480p to 720p, so on some TVs (namely cheap brands) their 720p models simply look better than their 1080p. Thats why I said between Sony and LG that aspect is a virtual wash.

I paroused the boxing day flyers at work and made note of the Sony as well.

Just to be sure though, if you say 32" may be too big, you know about the dwarf in size due to the switch in aspect ratio from 5:4 to 16:9, right? Just checking, some people don't. A 32" is roughly a 24" CRT, but a few inches wider.

Personally, I would go with the 1080p set for the abilityto use it as a 'good' PC monitor in the future. Otherwise, 720p at that size is fine for games and TV.
