Hello everyone, my friend's aunt had a problem with her computer so she brought it to me. The problem was that everytime the computer started up, it would run chkdsk before windows xp started and it would not finish. Well I took the computer and ran chkdsk /f from the recovery console. It finished the first part (file verification) and started on the second part (index verfication). It then started giving some type of error with an index in some file. It just kept listing this problem (around 10 times) for a couple of hours and would not ever finish.

So i took the HDD out of the computer and put it in mine. I can still all the contents, and I have already backed up the data she wanted. I then ran PartitionMagic and used their "check for errors". The first time it said there were a bunch or errors with a cross-linked file error as the last one. It had a button to fix the error so I ran that. Well it still doesnt work. The only difference is that when I run "chkdsk /f" now, it goes through the file verification and index verification fine, but then it stalls forever. When I run the "check for errors" now in PM it says "Error 1608 File record mark used, File ******" a tremendous amount of times and then "Error #983 Too many errors found, process halted." and it quits. I don't know what else to do, and I would like to fix it rather than reformat it.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

There's no way I'd spend that much time messing w/ it if I could recover my data (which you said you already had). Not the answer you're looking for but I say just reformat the thing and be done w/ it.

I second what ValuedCustomer says, either the file system is messed up beyond repair or the HD is failing. I would suggest running the HD manufacturers utility on it to make sure the drive is still good, if it is then delete the partions on it and format the sucker.

To much wasted time... I would have reformatted as soon as I gotten the data from the hard drive.
